Boarding Bites

Hey guys! So I know September is a long way away, but for a while I’ve wanted to start a blog about boarding school food. As a vegan going through the application process, this has been a concern and there isn’t much info about “special diets.” I want it to be more than just me, so let me know if you’d be interested in doing this! (You could remain anonymous, of course.)

I am concerned too. I do not eat any fruit or vegetables(except occasionally corn).

@prepster1234‌ What I have in mind is kids from a bunch of different schools posting pictures and descriptions of their food every once in a while. I’d love it if you blogged about the BS experience, not just the food.

Sounds perfect. Keep me updated please

@prepster1234 @HistoryGeek40 I’m not planning on starting the blog till the fall, but if you want to snap some food pics at revisits, be my guest.

Although there is a good chance they’re playing it up for revisits…

I’m definitely in! I’m vegetarian and not much used to American food in general, so you can expect a lot of food rants/raves from me.

@stargirl3 congratulations on your acceptances! You deserve it! As far as your blog, count me in! I am also a vegan. DM me if you want to know what my school choice for next year is!

Lol being vegetarian at Lawrenceville is difficult enough, being vegan is near impossible.

@mrnephew‌ So you can’t just get pasta and veggies?

That’s really really bland.

And you’ll get the same thing over and over and over again…

Hey, I’m interested in your blog, too. I’ll be at Andover and I would love to help out by sending pictures or whatever. Feel free to DM me or contact me with whatever.

@mrnephew‌ I basically eat the same things every day, so bland vegan food doesn’t mean no vegan food.

@natakwali‌ I’ll be in touch in the fall!

I’ll take pictures of food at Exeter. I have to warn you that my diet consists of meat and ice cream.

To get an early start on this…

-The food at Emma Willard’s Revisit Day was /terrible/- for vegetarians/vegans especially. Not many options: an avocado sandwich (ugh, I like avocados well enough but not for lunch), buns, and slices of lettuce/tomato. Some kind of soup which I wasn’t sure if it was veg or not, so I didn’t try it… Two salads… And that was it. I hated it. Had to fill up on snack food later. (there were these nice cupcakes, however)

-Madeira’s, by contrast, was amazing. There was rice, a few gravies, the usual salads, something like garlic bread, plain pasta and tomato sauce right next to it, fruit, a few soups, and finally ice cream at the end (!!!). And they all tasted great! I think this was what finalized my decision… After Emma’s food, I loved this.

Solebury’s vegan food is really good. It’s not the quality of a veg*n restaurant, but there are always options.

…although I will have to make sure they get real peanut butter in the dining hall.

Still interested

Andover has a big salad bar, vegan pizza option, pasta bar at most lunch/dinner. Not sure about eggs and pasta (know this can be an issue from food allergies). There are often made to order stir fry dishes. There is sometimes real peanut butter - with big warning signs to prevent cross-contamination. There was sunbutter last week. Food is pretty good there.
