It’s so good to meet some other newbies. Has anyone else started scheduling their interviews and campus visits yet?

Not me (: I’m going to do those in September. Once school starts then I won’t be too bombarded with schoolwork. Maybe mid-September… When is the busiest time?

Yep. Andover is tomorrow. Deerfield in a week. Hotchkiss on the 8th of August. Taft and Loomis are on the 23rd of September. Kent on the 24th. Middlesex is on the 20th of September. And I don’t know about St. Mark’s yet. Anyone else?

I thought I was gonna start calling a few schools soon, but I took a practice SSAT and got a 62% I don’t want to schedule interviews and tours at schools that I won’t have a chance of getting into. I think what I’m going to do is to practice for the SSAT for a little while longer, and then once I take another practice test, I’ll look at the score and see which schools I could get into.

@rizzledrizzle,
I’d recommend scheduling your interview now. In the fall, it’ll get hard trying to schedule them because most of the slots are filled, so you won’t get your first choice slots. I’d say after October it gets really busy. When I went to SPS in mid/late fall, the waiting room was PACKED. Good luck!

@ifax: It probably isn’t the smartest move to post the exact dates of your interviews. There’s no need to be that specific on CC. It’s too identifiable.

That sucks ballerina! What practice book were you using? I finished the SSAT Preparing and Applying and my dad got me Kaplan and Princeton based on fax’s advice. Kaplan is a MIRACLE maker with analogies!

Hm… I wonder when St. Marks starts to allow applicants to schedule interviews… Hopefully soon?

EDIT: Found out! Monday September 26th.

I used Kaplan for the practice test, but I’ve studied a little bit using the Princeton one. I might take the ISEE, because I started doing a few practice problems of those and they were a lot easier for me to understand and complete. I tanked the math section of the SSAT, and I think that has something to do with the fact that I haven’t done any math all summer. Hopefully once I study hard enough and get back in school, I can get at least an 80%!

The Princeton Review math sections are quite helpful. You should work your way through those. Mark the problems in the review sections that you get wrong, then go back and make yourself a test exclusively of those problems. Kids who haven’t had Geometry definitely need to pay special attention to those sections. Also, I felt the “Math Vocabulary” page at the beginning is worth a review.

Also, if there are topics you don’t understand, try www.khanacademy.org. It’s free!

@2010 hopeful,
Wow, even after being on this site for over a year, I’m still doing stupid stuff like that! Thanks for pointing that out though, I’ll see if I can get that post removed.

God… Just dropped my phone in the park. Word to self: ALWAYS put a case on your phone. It has a few scratches. On the back and stuff. Sad…

On a happier note from me I’m skeptical about applying to more than six schools. Because during the interview dont they ask what schools youre applying to…?

@rizzledrizzle,
Yes they ask what other schools you’re looking at. Just tell them honestly. I doubt they’ll look down on you for saying that you’re applying to more than six schools.

Opening night for our musical tonight!!!(not that any of you would care)

What musical are you doing?

I applied last year for 9th grade, and didn’t get in anywhere where I applied. I’m reapplying this year, only 2 of the schools I applied to last year am I reapplying too, and am going to consider new options. The 2 I’m reapplying to are Kent, and Loomis Chaffee. The others I’m looking at are, Hotchkiss, Lawrenceville, maybe Peddie…not sure. Definitely need a swim school. Good luck everyone!

Good luck, ars1996! Are there any tips you would care to offer about applications? When to start, etc? Thanks!

ifax, How did your Andover interview go yesterday? Do you feel like your prior interview experience was helpful?

@Invent,
It definitely was. I wasn’t nearly as nervous, and it went really well. My interviewer was really nice, and seemed to understand music, so we had something to talk about. Also, she asked me a ton of questions about why I wanted to reapply, and what it was like not getting in. Definitely different from my interview last year.

That’s good news. Good luck to you and I still hope you get in somewhere this year around the Aug 1 tuition deadline.
