Boarding School Applicants for Entry Year: 2012

Are Exeter’s music and theatre program good? Like, at all?

Hey guys! I’m not new to CC (I check this around a lot) but this is the 1st time I post. And ive read all the posts in this topic! Well, 1st of all I’m an international, and I’m applying to freshman in BS. First choice choate. I wanna know do ECs weigh too much when applying to top tier schools like HADES?

@Eminte,

If that is your real name, do not post using it. You should preserve your confidentiality.

Yes EC’s do count very much at all the elite schools. The schools are looking for well-rounded students who can both participate and contribute to the richness of the school’s dynamics, and not just study.

I’ve heard Cate and Thacher are the " Andover and Exeter of the West", if so, which one is the " Exeter" and which the “Andover”(in comparable terms)

Oh lord, Am, if you are trying to compare Cate and Thatcher to A and E, you are missing the point. The West Coast schools are perhaps comparable with the strong education you would receive but they have a very different look and feel, and by and large the student body possesses a different character and attitude. Neither one is truly just like A or E and that’s a good thing!!

I would do Thacher is Exeter and Cate is Andover. Just random.

I know that they are very different, but I mean, Exeter has a formal dress code and seems more preppy, while Andover seems more relaxed. Andover’s steryotype is that it’s a humanities powerhouse, while Exeter’s supposed forte is Math and Science.

Cate & Thacher cannot be reasonably compared with Andover & Exeter, because they are much, much smaller. They would compare more accurately with Groton or St. Mark’s perhaps, if with any East Coast schools.

Has anyone finished their gateway candidate profiles yet?

Yes, that’s historically the breakdown, though neither is weak in any academic area. I did know a classmate who tranferred from Andover to Exeter after our first year, allegedly because he felt as though Andover’s math course options weren’t sufficient. We all thought he was crazy (and always felt as though the schools were basically the same, despite the rivalry), but he obviously felt strongely enough about it to transfer.

american: I DID FOR ANDOVER!!

I did for Deerfield!!! However, I regret completing it so hastily because I do not believe that it was perfect. Thinking back on it, I should have waited until a little way into school so that I could know for sure what activities I was participating in. For example, I said I was taking acting classes, but my parents changed their minds and won’t let me do them because apparently I’m “too busy.” Should I say this during my interview?

Wow, I haven’t completed any.

It’s great that you guys are so on top of things! I’ve been really busy with adjusting to Deerfield and everything but I just wanted to say that if you have any specific DA questions I’d be happy to answer them! I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT HERE. PM me because it’s easier:)

@ballerina: saying your interview date could reveal your identity to AO’s!

i wish i reviewed my candidate profile for andover more…

Oh right!!! Darn, I shouldn’t have done that :frowning: Oh well, I don’t think I’ve been trashing schools or anything like that so I should be good… I hope!

second day of tennis practice was just finished!

My third day of field hockey was today  I play left half-back and I love it!!! I’m actually pretty good, which is surprising because I’m not the most athletic person in the world (major understatement).

My interview at Deerfield was today!!! It went really well. My tour guide and interviewer were so warm and friendly, and tons of people on campus smiled at my parents and me and said hello. The campus was absolutely gorgeous too! Tomorrow I’m going to St. George’s and I cant wait :)
