Boarding School Applicants for Entry Year: 2012

Oh cool, how did it go? I’m having mine next weekend and want to get a feel for what to expect. Like what do most people wear and what questions are asked?

I know that for my visit I had the interview first then the tour. My interviewer just asked me how school was going (grades, favorite/least favorite class) and about my extracurricular activities and what I liked to do for fun.

Okay thanks, what did you wear(if you’re a girl) or what did you see other girls wearing on the visit?

I just wore a dress with tights and a cardigan. Other girls were similarly dressed in a skirt and blouse with tights or dress and sweater with tights.

@helloel even though Taft is no dress code and it’s not on my list my friends who interviewed there this fall wore a solid color skirt and collared shirt with either a cardigan or jacket (and we are always told not to wear sneakers so everyone wears ballet flats instead). Basically what you wear to school. Good luck!!

Thanks to both of you! I think I have everything I need. I just didn’t know if interview attire differed from school to school. Like Deerfields interview attire seemed like it would be more formal than all the other ones

I literally wore the exact same thing to all of my interviews (6) no matter what the dress code at the school. Our placement department says to dress for an interview because you only have one chance to make a first impression, save your casual attire for after you get in. If you look like it matters to you to be there, that is what will come across. At Deerfield there were a lot of guys in blazers and bermuda shorts wearing flip flops (on a Saturday)–but these were students. So even casually there is still a formality to it all. But in saying that, Hotchkiss/Choate/Deerfield all had the same well dressed vibe with lots of people interviewing and waiting in a common space. All very much the same–girls as I described above, boys in navy blazer and pants. At one of my interviews one guy in the room was wearing basketball shorts and I remember thinking that wasn’t a very good choice, because he looked like he didn’t care when everyone else did. Then his dad asked a question about “serious offenses” and how often kids get kicked out.

Oh and this might sound stupid or weird but I got a really plain manicure the day before each of my interviews (like beige or a french), no crazy colors and pretty short. Then I wasn’t self conscious of my hands looking like I was in the barn all day which is how they usually look.

Hah, that’s a good idea, mine don’t always look too great either. Just submitted everything (because I don’t like submitting anything before the due date because I’m afraid I’ll get a new idea for my essay) and even though I looked over the essays a million I looked over it after a submitted my essay, and there was a grammar mistake! Ahh, I don’t know how I missed that, and it’s going to bother me forever!

Has anyone interviewed when there has been snow/rain? I’m interviewing at Deerfield later this month, and if there’s any kind of bad weather I was thinking I might wear Hunter rain boots. Would that send off some sort of casual/dirty-ish vibe? Maybe I’m over-thinking this…but, like anyone, I just want to show up dressed appropriately! Thanks!

ive interviewed in snow, rain, and generally gross days and I wear my rainboots and slicker! its only sensible!

What if your SSAT score is lower than the one you had before? Which one gets sent in?

Thanks, ehpant!

Rizzle, from what I’ve heard, I think SSAT automatically sends all of your scores to whatever schools you had listed. You could try contacting them and ask them not to send your recent scores, I suppose.

oh and btw everyone, i wore some under armour warmth leggings under my skirt instead of tights at an especially cold interview, and it was such a good idea! I was warm throughout the tour and i wore boots to cover the footless bottom! I don’t think anyone could tell becauase they were black, but I was super comfy!

Interviewing in February! Hopefullyyy…

Do you think the schools will weigh heavily the fact that I had one grammar mistake in my essay? I feel like they will be reading them so quickly and won’t notice. I was so mad, the gateway to prep schools app automatically reloaded and I didn’t notice so it didn’t save a grammar change. Do you think schools will think I’m careless?

It’s not going to be a big deal. Don’t freak out. Too many people worry that one mistake is going to cost them acceptance, and it’s not.

Who scheduled interviews: you or your parents?

My parents. I wanted to but my mom thought it best that she called because he has her own schedule and stuff.

Need to tell my dad that, hahaha.
