So I'll be at mx in the fall. Anyone have any info on what styles and brands are popular (esp. for IN CLASS clothes, because I've heard that non-class doesn't matter much because everyone wears sweats in offtime anyway). I've been looking at non-branded (save the moose logo) a&f stuff, since it seems the most age-dresscode-appropriate.

Do a search, I think you’ll yield pretty good results.

i did already. what do you suggest that I search?

H&M!!! everything thing there is fabulous and stylish and most of it will work if u have a dress code (like me :/) some people say jcrew works too but H&M is wayy more fun. try forever 21 also

oh and delias :)

Bee – most people are not into AF by the time they get to high school level. Their “older” band Hollister is worn. HM and Delia are great if you have a great eye for fashion and what looks good. If you are not sure, stick with the classics – jcrew and polo. There are a ton of outlets around for them, with huge sales going on right now. Just make sure to rip the labels off jcrew outlet clothes (they look almost identical, but the label has a double or triple diamont on it, where the non outlet doesnt).
The most important thing is to be true to yourself and your own personal style. Even if you wear something that is “off”, if it reflects the true you, then its right. However, if you havent developed your style yet, then shop at jcrew/polo, buy the basics and just enough to start you off with, in case you change your mind or find your own fit. Dont forget flipflops.

Rip the label off, why is that? Are kids teasing / looking down on kids who have the ones with the diamond (outlet) labels?

in some of the smaller schools there are groups of kids that have been known to tease, etc, to the point of a group of girls not allowing a boy who is a friend, to ask a girl out b/c she wore the wrong brand of clothes. This is extreme but happened recently. So if someone is unsure to begin with, better to insure yourself.

Lol “not allow” a boy to ask a girl out? That boy needs to grow up, and so do the girls.

What school do you go to?

How do you say that? Were they like “you can’t ask her out her clothes are cheap” Like how does that conversation go?

Andover’s paper the Phillipian has a “Look of the Week” where they profile someone on campus notable for his or her style. They are all different and creative, from high end fashionistas to a boy who raids his dad’s closet, to Delia’s shoppers. My daughter thinks it’s ludicrous that anyone would care whether something was from an outlet or not—she and her friends pride themselves on the good deals they find!

I used to be a big fan of A&F and Hollister but i’m not so much anymore.
I agree that H&M, jcrew, polo and Delias are good places to start tho.
I don’t necessarily think you should shop by the brand but by the look…you know what i mean? What do you want to look like? Preppy? Bright? Totally out there? Knowing what you want will help your search go a lot better…i hope this helps :)

um, AF is the “older” barnad, not Hollister. it even says so on the sites. The traget market for Hollister is younger teens, whereas AF is older teens and college kids. maybe you’re thinking of abercrombie? that’s the youngest, marketing to older kids and tweens.

No I meant AF, not abercrombie. Hollister is more in than AF, for what ever reason. But really dont concentrate on brand, more on developing your own personal style. You can easily pay for a top around 300 at Intermix, and find an incredibly similar top for 9.99 at HM (you just have to develop an eye for a good quality item, vs a cheap imitation). Thats why if you right now tend toward preppy, I advocate jcrew or polo since you really cant miss with them while youre developing your own style. Of course noone ever became Diana Vreeland without a few bloopers.
In terms of comments about asking girl out, etc., as I said, its an extreme situation, but its a true story from one of the smaller top schools and will exist in all schools to some degree.
Also, what they profile in the school paper isnt necessarily what is in or popular.
Please understand Im not advocating being popular/running with the heard, but trying to answer the OPs question as directly as possible.

hey mhmm guess what? I got a top at Intermix today for $20!! I was so excited because it was discounted like 85%!! So i guess you can still shop at brand name stores and find sales…sometimes
izzy-have you ever heard of [Fashion Trends & Styles - Polyvore](<a href=“Luxury fashion & independent designers | SSENSE”>http://www.polyvore.com/) ? if you haven’t you should take a look. Cuz you can search something like “preppy outfits” or “j crew” or whatever for an inspiration on what to look for when you buy things

For clothes try J Crew, Polo Ralph Lauren, LL Bean, North face, Patagonia, Brooks Brothers, Vineyard Vines, Lilly Pulitzer, and Lacoste. For bags try Longchamp bags or Northface bookbags and LL Bean bookbags are not that bad. For shoes, Rainbows (they are a brand of flip flops), Hunter boots (any kind of rainboot basically, it rains a lot in NE), LL Bean bean boots, Tory Burch flats, Jack Rogers sandals, UGG’s (yes they are ugly but really warm in winter), Minnetonka Moccasins, Sperry’s
When school is not in session most people just wear sweats from the school store. A lot of girls wear Juicy sweats also Seven for all Mankind jeans, True Religion Jeans, Ray Ban Sunglasses
These are just some of the typical brands people wear, but a lot of people wear other clothing and have there own style which is a bit refreshing.
