Boarding School Rankings

Peddie is up and coming and will soon be a top 5 school.

I received an information based on different factors' consideration.

The ranking was determined based on SAT score, endowment/student, number of AP classes, number of Sports club, number of Extracurricular activities, boarding students ratio, students to teachers ratio, percentage of the advanced degree holding faculties, students per class, and its history(foundation year)

peddie is nowhere near top 5.

LOL, wow Lvilleslacker, what did ol' Peddy do to u?
lol

Kauila, sooo many schools teach in this manner. No method of teaching is the "best" because each student has different needs, and different teaching methods could be great for one student and terrible for another. Also, with the college competition as it is right now, no school can claim to be definite. Have you attended Exeter? If you have you aren't proving to be a very good example of the open-minded student that the school is said to produce. If a school could be called the best, it would not because it taught seminar-style, this is a trait of many prep schools, calling it 'Harkness' doesn't change its effectiveness

I got into Andover, Groton, Choate, Milton, Taft but rejected from Exeter. I was mostly straight A's at a private school in Sydney and I did reasonably but not brilliantly in SSATs. But my interviews and essays were my best bits. I felt Andover was the best fit for me but it was a toss up between Exeter, Andover and Groton. Exeter rejected me (waiting list/deferred) but Groton was a little small and I prefer Andover because it seemed such a friendly and illustrious community.

Wh is Mercersburg not top 30?

i got into choate, SPS, taft, deerfield, hotchkiss, loomis...and i choose choate becuase of the people i met that day...also i loved the campus.... :)

Thanks Kuaila for the enlightening information; I was not aware that no other school can compare to Exeter.

i was accepted at milton, choate and loomis. i am going to choate because i feel like it has a lot of the creative spirit offered at milton, but with better educational facilities and opportunities.

shore,

You are certainly welcome to most of BS since you are from a region that is under represented. Of course you must be a very good student. Geographic location and racial background are another factors in admission.

what about st. Andrew's in DE?
haven't seen much about it.. and i'm going there next year haha
just curious.. i looked at the matriculations and they were better or as good as andover and exeter.. so where does it stand?

cookie...I think you made the best choice. The Choaties seem to be a happy bunch. & no I didn't attend Exeter but I wish I had.
btw...There are many nuances of Harkness that you don't understand and can't fully appreciate until you've seen it/or participated in it. Having said that, it is not the only reason that I believe PEA is so great....just an important one.

Whats BS erkybk? And just wondering with SSAT scores are scores of:

Math 791 (out of 800)
Reading 778
The other bit - 770
= 2339 out of 2400 good?

I honestly don't know as I know for SATs they would be terrific but for SSATs no idea as the exam was very very easy tbh.

shore,
Congratulations!

BS = Boarding School

SSAT scores are represented as percentile among the students who took the SSAT(not national scale). You have to look at the SSAT percentile.

But apparently SSAT does not count very much. I have gotton straight As
on my school reports and got overall 97 perscentile. But I was just waitlisted
at Deerfield, Hotchkiss, Groton, etc. Fortunately I was accepted by a few other schols and I decided to go to Saint Marks' School(SMS). I don't count on the waitlist and I will go to SMS. I love the school.

Oh I got 99% for everything but thats no indicator as the exam was hit or miss really.

How could I not get BS, sorry, lol.

Kualia, I think we can just agree to disagree as I dont feel like boring other CCers with a conversation which may not go anywhere, I am not saying that Harkness isn't an amazing system, simply that schools other than Exeter use it.

Basically, Harkness tables are common to an endless list of boarding scjhools, and probably some public schools.

Historically: "The name for the method comes from the oil magnate and philanthropist Edward Harkness, a graduate of St. Paul's School (Concord, NH) who presented the schools with a monetary gift in 1930.

Harkness tables are used by St. Paul's School, The Hotchkiss School, Deerfield Academy, Phillips Exeter Academy, Phillips Academy, Shady Side Academy, Loomis Chaffee, Mercersburg Academy, The Lawrenceville School, The Fieldston School, Greenwich Academy, The Moses Brown School, The Pingry School, Memphis Jewish High School , Hathaway Brown School, Horace Mann School, Cushing Academy, Palmer Trinity School, Asheville School, St. Paul Academy and Summit School, American Hebrew Academy, St. Mark's School of Texas, Middlesex School, St. George's School, The Masters School, Germantown Academy, GrKingswood-Oxford School, Milton Academy, Tampa Preparatory School, The American School in London, The Brunswick School, The John Cooper School, Regents School of Austin, Rocky Hill School of East Greenwich, RI, Annie Wright School, Guilford High School, The Ensworth School, The Hill School, The Taft School, Choate Rosemary Hall and Maimonides School.

And that is not a complete list.

Edward Harkness made the gift to Phillips Exeter Academy where this pedagogy is used exclusively. Every summer, Exeter teaches the Harkness method to the schools that are on Winterset's list above. No other school uses Harkness in every class across all disiplines, however most are working on implimenting it where available. The actual Harkness tables are all hand crafted in Exeter, New Hampshire therefore the waitlist for them is quite long.
Me thinks this topic has gotten old. Lets move on shall we?

There are many problems with the above comparisons.
1) Use of APs. Some schools (eg Exeter and St Paul and Deerfield) are doing away with APs as it forces them to teach to a test and more colleges (the academic side, not the admission office) are questioning the usage of APs (ie, an English class at Stanford or Harvard is not the same as an English class at a prep school). ?
Welcome to Excellence without AP
2) Are "Ivy Leagues" better than top Liberal Art schools or top Music or Art colleges?
3) Is a school like Exeter which has a poor Dance program better than another which has a great Dance program?
4) Is a very liberal NE school better for a conservative kid?

Bottom line is that each school is better for certain people.
