Hi,
I am thinking of applying to 10th grade boarding school. I only plan on applying to deerfield, choate, andover, exeter, and hoichkiss. I have never applied to any of them before except for choate which I applied to and was acceted to as a day student. I am from new york city and my parents thought we could find a place to do choate as a day student and they couldn’t so now they are letting me reapply for boarding(all the schools I would be applying to would be as a boarder.) I just wanted to know around how many studnets these schools take in 10th grade, and what grade/ssat scores I would need.
Hope this helps @plainchair521 .
Last year, Deerfield had @ 50 new 10th grade students. Half girls half boys. The school has many events to integrate new students into the community. Considering that the 9th grade is about 106 students, adding 50 is a relatively large increase in class size - I also think you have a better chance entering as a 10th grader because there are fewer applicants. Other perks: Sophomores get their own dorm room. No Saturday classes.
If you remain interested in Choate, have you asked if you could just change your status from day to boarding? Is that an option for your family?
If you need to put boarding school off for a year, and you were accepted to Choate this year, it might be worth reaching out to admissions. Maybe there are options such as entering as a 10th grader without repeating the entire application process. I’ve never heard of that happening, but it might be with exploring?
And to answer your original question, 10th grade additions to PA are large with many integration programs and events.
^^agree
There are kids at our school that started as day and were able to switch to board after a month. I imagine if you reached out to Choate right now, especially with the craziness going on and people not accepting spots, they might be able to accept you as a boarder for your 9th grade year.
While I think it is preferable to start in 9th, there are plenty of kids who enter in 10th in most of these schools. I will caution you that 10th grade applicants typically have a “compelling reason” which makes 10th grade admission more competitive.
Just call Choate, email Choate, you need to speak to them right away!
