I applied to Merced too. I didn't get the supplemental questionnaire, I got the one from UCLA though. My GPA was 4.1 and SAT was 2030. I really hope that some of you might do this, because then I would have somebody to go through this with. Otherwise, I'd be too scared to do this alone.

Are any of you planning on appealing to berkeley for fall 2009?

I'm planning on appealing to a few UC's but if i don't get in, then its between the transfer option and uc irvine. Any opinions on what I should choose? I'm kind of looking into a pre-med field...or something do with public health. Thanks in advance for the feedback.

So do most of you who were offered have high GPAs and SATs? Or are we the rejects who couldn't get into Fall 2009 or Spring 2010?

I personally have a horrible GPA (3.1 weighted, 2.9 unweighted), so I'm wondering what kind of students UCB offers this to. For me, I'm choosing between this transfer option and UCSB.

I also was given this option- I have something like a 3.2-3.3 UC GPA. My regular SAT was 1990 or a 1390/1600, and my SAT 2s were 790 in Lit and 740 in History. I've taken 6 AP/honors classes. My ACT score was a 30.

Whomever evaluated my application must have seen something they liked. I was told by a student who works in the admissions office that this option is like a Berkley wait-list sort of thing, but as it's relatively new, not that many people actually do it.

I think I might, though, since I was rejected from Davis and SB. Accepted at both Merced and Santa Cruz. I did apply to Merced and I did not receive a questionaire.

follow your dreams guys! I would stick it out for 2 years and then graduate from my dream school

The reason why I would be a little wary is because the academic environment at Merced is going to be different from that at Cal. Having never looked into Merced much I can’t really say anything but I am not sure how big the jump will be from one school to the other.

I think that a good compromise is to take the school that you like best, and then transfer after one or two years. If you’re accepted, then that means that you meet some level set by the admissions committee and it’s a better indicator of your success at Cal.

and btw the whole plan is to increase Merced enrollment. After two years, most people don’t want to leave their friends. I’d be interested to see what percentage of people actually follow up on the deal.

Point of interest:

During the UCM reception, I was talking to the chancellor, and he said that UCM plans to discontinue this program. So the class of 2013 (us) will be the last class to have the transfer option.

I agree with bsd; changing the environment is just too much. I visited Merced, and no offense or anything, but Cal could be ten times its size. On Friday (before Easter), there was 1 person on the entire second floor of the library.

I agree with Bsd. My daughter , a soph. had this option. She declined. Her new friendships, not to mention the opportunities she has experienced, influenced her decision to stay. She also believes it would be easier to maintain her 3.75 GPA while participating in other activities.

I for one hope they don’t discontinue this program. My DH is a professor at Berkeley, and he says that his best students are transfers. We have several friends whose kids are at Merced, and they like it.

it’s just a ploy to get some talent into merced.

but honestly, it’s undergrad. it’s not as important as graduate, so if you really wanna go to Cal, i’d take it.

Hi fiesta of fire,

Seeing that you are an experienced Cal student, do you think being able to attend Cal after 2 years at Merced is worth it?

The reason I’m considering it is because If i keep a great GPA at Merced and then transfer to Cal, I would graduate with a GPA that is relatively the same or better than the average 4 year student from Berkeley… hopefully.

And also, if you were applying for jobs or grad school, which would look better: a degree from Berkeley or from Irvine?

Protip: I’m not an experienced Cal student, just that my best friend’s mom and dad both work at UCLA (mom specifically in admissions) so I know a bunch of the stuff that’s going on ;)

But I know for sure undergrad isn’t as important as grad school. If you’re doing this Bobcat to Bear option, keep working hard at Merced, make yourself stand out. Take some extracurriculars to show you’re more than just a study-freak.

And a degree from Berkeley in most cases would look comparatively better, though Irvine isn’t a shabby school in itself.

leftist, DH = dear husband.

this post seems dead, but did anyone here choose the bobcat-to-bear transfer?

Looking at the posters’ subsequent posts, no, it doesn’t look like it. 2 went to UCSD, 1 went to Irvine, 1 went to Davis.

I got that option for UCLA, but needless to say chose Cal.
