Bonner Scholar Programs

One school has nominated my son to apply for this program.

Honestly, I have heard of being a "Bonner Scholar", but I do not know a thing about this program. If you are in a Bonner Scholar or have a child who is one, please let me know about this program. Kindly post here or send a PM. What are the opportunities offered? Is it very worthwhile to be in this program while in college, or not so much? Thanks.

Guilford College has a nice description.

Sadly, our offspring was not qualified.

It is a great program at Rhodes. My D knows several. The Bonner $ is in addition to other aid , which can be a real deal-maker for many families. [Rhodes College | Bonner Scholarship](http://www.rhodes.edu/finaid/611.asp)

Well, it looks like my son qualifies at this school, but I don’t know. They invited him to apply. I am not sure what it all entails and if it worth it. Looks like Rhodes is very generous. I don’t know how much more in aid my son would receive if he became a Bonner Scholar recipient. Also, I wonder what happens if my EFC goes higher the following year. Does he get kicked out, or does it have to do with your EFC as a high school senior coming in? Lots of questions. I wonder if he’d need to do community service work for 10 hours per week PLUS work study. I think that is too much for a full time student. There seems to be potential for new opportunities through this program. Love to hear from those with experience with this program.

The Rhodes kids don’t seem to have a problem with the time commitment. They really seem to enjoy the activities and don’t view them as “work”. They have established some traditions (red sneakers at graduation for one), excel at campus leadership, and are very proud of their status. And the summer opps are pretty cool.

Well, this offer “to apply” just fell flat. I just showed it to my son. He told me that he would not want to be in this program because he wants the freedom to come home summers to see his old friends (forget about his family, lol). He would need to commit two summers to this program. So, sigh, now he wants to go to a school that I believe is a poor fit because it is his best package so far. BTW, none of us have even seen that school. He made this decision purely looking at dollars in his FA package. He only applied there because they offered him a free priority application. The place is known as a party school. Sigh…I just told him that he does not HAVE TO apply to this program, but I do not want him to attend the other school just because it costs less. He has lots of acceptances to choose from!!

Check the specifics. The summer programs are not for the full summer IIRC. Keep pitching. ;)

curm, I am going to call try to reach the person in charge of the program and ask about it. Then I’ll present it to my son, and let him decide. Thanks for your help.

If anyone else has experience with Bonner’s, I’d like to learn more. Thanks.

I copied this from the program at Earlham

That should leave plenty-o-time to chill with his bros. ;)

Niece1 is a Bonner Scholar at Guilford. Her summer commitments are short enough, and flexible enough, for her to do plenty of other things. Find out exactly how the program operates at the college your son has been accepted by. It may be something he can work with.

happymom, thanks. I just sent a PM to you.
