How do you know what books you need for your classes? Is this located in MYFSU somewhere? Thanks for your help.

You can catch the course listing in myFSU through the search function, and if a textbook has been finalized it’ll be listed there. Just click on the class number under the class name and then at the bottom of the page that comes up there should be a box that says “Textbook information”

You can also check the FSU Bookstore website’s textbook listing: efollett;

It’s also possible that a textbook hasn’t been finalized. This can be the case if the professor for a course isn’t finalized yet.

Thanks so much!

Is it better to buy books after receiving class syllabuses from each professor?

It’s ultimately going to be personal choice. Some professors may “require” that you have the book the very first class meeting, but most are understanding that with financial aid not being disbursed until the second week of classes, you may not have the money to go to the bookstore (or wherever is cheaper) and plop down who knows how much for their books. Some professors are nice and may even upload the first week or two’s reading so that if you don’t have the books yet, you won’t fall far behind.

I’ve had professors that used a different textbook than was listed online, which made me thankful that I hadn’t yet bought the book for that class. I almost always wait until the first class meeting, when the professor will almost always mention when you need the textbook. If they don’t, you can always ask. Some professors may list a textbook on the myFSU page but in reality don’t require it and just have it for reference. Waiting till the first class may save you a hefty chunk of change on textbooks.

So it’s going to be personal choice. If you are looking for a textbook and it’s only a few bucks, and for a class that a lot of people are taking, I’d probably go ahead and order it before classes. Odds are really low that the professor will change the textbook, especially since it has to be available at the bookstore on campus. If it’s for a class with only 15-20 people enrolled, I would wait till classes start.
