Books that make you dumb...

Here's a really interesting thing I found on the internet - a correlative study on college student's intelligence vs. books. It's silly because it doesn't really prove anything nor is it really scientific.

Post this in a different forum if you feel you must.

Ironically enough, it matched up perfect with me (Catch-22).

Top Books

1 1984
2 Pride And Prejudice
3 One Hundred Years Of Solitude
4 Harry Potter
5 Catch-22
6 The Sun Also Rises
7 The Great Gatsby
8 Moneyball
9 Crime And Punishment
10 Heart Of Darkness

1984!!! WOOO what a great book. I really want to read Catch 22, heard its excellent

I think it's hilarious that "The Holy Bible" is so low.

P.S. Also, "Lolita" is probably one of the best books ever.

I understand what he's doing, but it doesn't really seem very logical. Isn't it extremely obvious that its simply that maybe lower level schools are exposed to these books because they are simpler to comprehend NOT because they make you dumb? I guess it's funny, but it's totally illogical. Lower level high schools wouldn't bother teacher certain books that are harder to comprehend. Am i just missing something?

I love the book Lolita. I found a first-edition copy of it a couple of months ago!!! Woo hoo.

Good point, Alexsmol.

This is severely mislabeled. These books don't necessarily "make you dumb." It just shows books that people with lower SAT scores tend to like more. These books are not the input for which a lack of intelligence is the output.

haha what a redneck attempt at statistical research, but very amusing nonetheless

You are all taking it too seriously. Of course the books don't really make you dumb. Even if the study was more thorough, correlation does not equal causation! It's just for fun! I found it on Gawker.com.

Brave New World is the one true antedote to sharpened analytical abilities.

Well, it's on a UChicago forum...so what did you expect? :) It's still a little crazy to think that some of you guys actually analyzed it...

"From the UChicago network on FB
