Boost admission chances @ Georgetown

Hi, I’m a current sophomore whose really looking to get a Georgetown acceptance letter in a couple years. If any current or former Georgetown students have some advice on how to boost admission chances, please let me know!!

My stats:
-Approx. 3.91 GPA at a oddly competitive public high school
-Currently taking A.P. Euro, planning on taking more A.P. Classes junior year
-Involved in Mock Trial (competing at State level)
-Somewhat involved in some interest clubs

Not sure how legacy admit works, but my cousin graduated from Georgetown undergrad about 10 years ago.

Thanks

Strongly considering International Relations/Political Science as a major, floating with a Statistics minor

You are a sophomore which means you just have one year of a GPA and no standardized testing. IMO it is too early to focus on one college and too early to know if you will be a viable candidate for Gtown.

It is great that you take school seriously and know that college will be on your horizon, but IMO it is too early to start planning for specific colleges. For now you should focus on:
–Working hard, learning, and doing as well as you can in the most challenging curriculum you can manage.
–When the time comes study for standardized tests.
–Continue your involvement in activities you care about and work towards making meaningful contributions and take leadership roles (if available) in those activities.
–Enjoying spending time with your family and friends.

When the time comes (junior year) asses your academic stats (including GPA, standardized tests, course rigor) as well as your financial needs and apply to a wide range of reach, match, and safety schools that appear affordable (you will have to run a net price calculator for each school you consider) and that you would be happy to attend. If you like Gtown you can look at some other Jesuit universities all of which share a number of attributes. Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities--Jesuit Colleges and Universities Never forget that there are many wonderful schools out there where you can have a great 4 year experience and get where you want to go in life.

Also I don’t know Gtowns policy but I never heard of of any college where having a cousin who is a graduate of a university would give you any legacy preference (unless perhaps he/she donated a building, millions of dollars, etc.).

Lots of missing information here. Few general pieces of advice:

  1. Try to align your ECs with your intended major. Limit yourself to no more than 2-3 EC areas but strive for depth. If you really want to go into IR/Pol Sci, try to build a network and expertise in the field.
  2. Study hard for NMSQT.
  3. Try to do an internship/job with a G’town alum who can provide a LOR.
  4. Ask your parents to pay full fare.

Good luck!

My biggest suggestion…you need to broaden your college application list. Georgetown is a competitive admit even for the most qualified applicants. You need to open your mind to more and varied options in terms of cost and competitive admissions.

Focus on what you can to to be a competitive applicant for ANY college you wish to apply to. You may actually change your mind about G’town in the next two years…or you may decide you want more options from which to choose.

Don’t lock yourself into “prepping” for one college.
