I'll be applying to UCLA this upcoming Fall 09 as a Psychology major.
I have a rather low GPA as of Winter '09, a 3.1167 :(
I'm missing 3 prereqs, and have 1 class left for IGETC, but they will all be done before transferring. If I do well in all those glasses, I should have a 3.30 GPA. I also plan to be TAP certified.

Do you think I'll get in?
-ucla psych, 3.3gpa, TAP and igetc certified, upward trend

I've actually been thinking about Sociology as well, but i figured since they're both impacted majors, and that I have more of Psych's pre-req list done.
I'm curious as to why you suggested sociology though, care to explain?

I'm not sure if you realize this but spring gpa does not factor into your admission chances. Your GPA, 3.1, is the final GPA UCLA will look at, not the probable 3.3 GPA. Also, as a psychology major myself, I can honestly tell you your chances stand very slim. The average GPA for those admitted to psychology in 2008 was 3.67. I'm glad you have TAP on your shoulders though, but I'm not sure if it will actually help you at this point.

if they are going to reject ANYONE with TAP, theres no better candidate than you. Sorry to be harsh, but psych is very competitive and your chances arent too great.

Can you raise your gpa higher than a 3.3? Can you take some extra classes that are easy A's? If you got it to a 3.4-3.5 with TAP you might have a chance.

If he's assuming that he will get straight As in the next summer session / fall semester , than the future doesn't look too bright if he gets one B.

Because if he is looking at a 3.3 with straight As , than its gonna be a 3.2 or so with one B.

edit:

Even if you do get accepted, your agreement is gonna be pretty tough. I remember someone here taking 3 pre-reqs during the spring and had to maintain a 3.7 or else he/she would be rescinded. I do not recall his/her major though...

hey thanks guys for being honest. I was pretty sure of the answer, but just wanted the opinions from you guys. I can try my best to get some easy A's from other classes. THE highest is gpa possible for me is a 3.49, or something like that.

So it appears that Psych is a no-go, so my second question is would you guys suggest a Sociology major? The pre-req list is relatively short and I could finish it by the time I transfer over (but not by application time)

which CC are you currently attending? try and take REALLY EASY A classes to boost that gpa up. i wouldnt say ALL hope is lost, but psych is really impacted at UCLA and i say ur chances look better as a soc major. and write a REALLY STELLAR personal statement

I'm currently at SMC and I have completed about half of the psych pre-req list with B's. My first year in cc, I screwed around and got two C's, two A's and the rest are B's, so that's whats hurting my GPA.
I just want to get into UCLA, and don't mind doing sociology, because I plan to apply to pharm school after I graduate. I hear achieving a sociology major at UCLA takes less time than other majors, so that helps me in the long run.
Also, if I start getting all A's in Sociology pre-reqs, UCLA will see that although my overall GPA is low, I've done well in their prerequisites.

none of these people can accuarately claim that you will or will not receive admission. Do not take their words to heart because you must know every school must admit a certain amount of gpa's from the spectrum.

Thanks bblakc, I'm aware that they can't give me 100% accurate claims on admission, but I was just curious as to how other students think of my situation.

You are worrying too much about the brand name. Major in what you like, and do the best that you can. If you do not get into UCLA, then you can attend another UC and get the same education. Just a forewarning, if you are only able to maintain a 3.1 at you Community College, expect a large jump in difficulty at UC ___ ____.

People on these boards think there is a magical number that automatically admits you into a school. Upward trend is admired by UCLA, as there are some stories on CC about people with straight C's their first couple semesters, and straight A's the rest of the time. They get in with a 3.4-5 which is below the average GPA.

Just try your best for the duration of Community College and see where it gets you.
