No questions yet? Trying to figure out if DS should use SAT scores or not for RD due tomorrow! 1440

This may help you…link to an interview in BC magazine from the summer of 2022:

https://www.bc.edu/bc-web/sites/bc-magazine/summer-2022/features/inside-bc-admissions-.html

In case the link doesn’t work, here’s what was written about tests:

What is the profile of a student who’s accepted to BC these days? Test scores during the pandemic have been skewed because those who choose to submit are likely to have high scores, but the mean SAT score for students who submitted scores and were admitted to the Class of 2026 was 1,484. And the mean ACT was 34, with 36 being the maximum score. So for students looking to apply to the contemporary Boston College, I think good guideposts are SAT scores of at least 1,400 to 1,450, and minimum ACT scores of 33 to 34. Does that mean students should not apply if they’re below those levels? It doesn’t mean that at all. What it does mean is that the other aspects of the application—the grades, the rigor of the program, the AP courses—need to be strong.

Thank you! Still unsure … strong grades and ECs from big public HS. 5 total APs, 2 4s, 3 3s. Taking 2 more this May. Essay is fine, not outstanding.

I guess maybe think about sub scores in relation to major. In other words, if your student is a math/comp sci/engineering major, submit if the math is really strong (750+?)?

It’s just so hard to know. My D is from midsized public in NJ w/IB Diploma. Strong grades (3.9/5.2) and ECs too, but no hooks. She’s got a 1520 and will submit, but is struggling with whether to apply ED2. BC is very popular in our area and HS guidance is telling her she’s got a <20% chance without ED. It’s become impossible to know how colleges distinguish among strong applicants. Often comes down to priorities we’ll never know (athlete, band player, gender, geography, major, etc.). Good luck!

Thank you for your insight. 740 on math, looking to do Computer Science. Good luck to your daughter, she sounds like an excellent candidate and will get into some very good schools for sure.

Oh…thats a great math score for comp sci. D will be my 3rd kid going through this process and it’s never been harder to predict outcomes. She has a lot of solid safeties and I know from my older kiddos that they thrive where planted! Fingers crossed for you. We are anxious to hear back but don’t want to wish this time away, as they’ll be off to college in the blink of an eye.

My daughter will be applying in a year. Can you tell me what her safeties are? We’re thinking Holy Cross, maybe William and Mary. Just looking for some direction. She’s seen so many schools with her older siblings that she’s crossing some off her list a little too quick, I think.

I’ll message you.

Have Gabelli finalists been notified yet?

Does anyone know the chances of getting admitted to BC RD after an ED2 deferral + LOCI submission?

Yes.

Was everyone automatically considered? I’m assuming that would be communicated via email?

Oh just saw how few they accept………

Yeah, it’s pretty laughable. I just don’t understand the all or nothing merit package at BC.

Our daughter’s safety schools all coming up roses: William & Mary, Gettysburg, Catholic U, Fordham, Baylor- with strong scholarships (waiting on W&M scholarship info) Holy Cross also, but results not yet in. We did submit SAT scores and I think that has made all the difference for honors programs and merit scholarships. Our SAT Prep source was a big help. The safety schools are a smart option for reducing financial burdens of college.

I completely agree. In fact, BC went from an early front runner (mainly due to its location, size, community, and pretty campus) to one of my son’s least favorites that he applied to the more we went through the process. The fact that it costs so much yet there are so many colleges equal or superior to it academically made us realize that unless he got Gabelli, BC isn’t worth $80k+ for what my son plans to study.

I’m glad they’re able to meet the needs of those who have true financial hardships but families like ours don’t, yet we will struggle to pay over $300k for his BS degree. And it’s too bad because my kids attended 12 years of Catholic school so it seems like a natural fit. Notre Dame offers more in the form of merit aid. I don’t know why BC has to be so stingy. It’s a shame. We don’t even discuss it any more in our home.

This is EXACTLY the situation for my daughter. Huge front runner. Then she went on an Eagle for a Day visit and her guide (a freshman there on full financial aid package) indicated the disparity of wealth at BC. She’s also seeing things she doesn’t like on the BC instagram page (her words “they are trying way too hard”). So we shall see if she gets in, but she won’t be going.

BTW are you a Hoosier family? My brother is a 1993 grad!

Yes, my husband and I both attended IU. We actually met while freshmen there. Unfortunately our son doesn’t want to attend and IU has been extremely generous with a number of scholarships. It is his cheapest option by a mile (and Purdue, but even they came in at twice the price since they’re stingy with scholarships). But we told him we’d make it work if he could get into one of his dream schools. I’m glad BC is no longer a dream school at that sticker price!

My daughter will only be 16 when she graduates, so we didn’t allow her to apply to IU which is a plane ride away. But she went to a swim camp there (and met Lily King and Cody Miller!) and fell in love with the campus!
