Boston College Early Decision for Fall 2024 Admission

Before last year, there was a pattern of releasing the first Thursday in December. Last year, the first Thursday was Dec. 1 and as you mentioned, BC released on Tuesday the 6th. This year the first Thursday is the 7th. Hard to predict but likely one day the week of the 4th.

Last year, BC tweeted the week prior that results would be out “next week” and then tweeted again the morning of the release date. Best of luck to you, and remember it will all work out!

Does anyone know when BC announces Gabelli Scholars? The deadline for the application is November 1 along with ED and all applications submitted prior to deadline are evaluated. My daughter applied RD but before the November 1 deadline. Does anyone know if the admissions committee sends the applications to Gabelli or how that works?

BC’s website has some info on this, including what’s pasted below. Hope it is helpful. They say finalists will be notified by Feb 1 but in the past emails were typically sent the second week in January. Best of luck!

How are finalists selected?

Letters of invitation will be sent out to finalists along with an official offer of admission to BC by February 1. Finalists visit Boston College (at the University’s expense) in mid-March to learn more about the University, the Gabelli Presidential Scholars Program, and the city of Boston. During their visit, candidates are interviewed by faculty and administrative staff; and they participate in other evaluative experiences which all serve as the basis for the final choice of Presidential Scholars, who will be notified shortly thereafter.

How many Scholars are selected each year?

We invite about 15 students to become Presidential Scholars. Once admitted to BC as Presidential Scholars, students remain in the program for their 4 years at BC provided they maintain a 3.5 GPA and remain model citizens of the BC community throughout that time. Presently, there are 60 Scholars in the program.

@msch2 thanks so much for sharing and now I recall seeing that. I wonder how they look at RD applications and give acceptance prior to the RD announcement.

One of the great mysteries of the process. Many schools (including W&L and Notre Dame) have this approach to the big merit scholarships. My guess is that stand-out RD applications submitted by Nov 1 (e.g. high test scores, GPAs, and other “spikes”) are flagged during first cuts for scholarship consideration. Wouldn’t hurt to have your high school guidance counselor reach out to BC or otherwise flag the applicant as a potential Gabelli scholar. Just a thought. Also, we have experience with the W&L and ND process and while our kids were not officially told they were accepted, being considered for a scholarship like this is generally a sign that scholarhsip or no scholarship, the student will be admitted when the regular decisions are released.

@msch2 I believe it is a way of being an anti Ivy scholarship in a way (it is hard to turn down a free education and the perks that come associated with the Gabelli program). It is nice to know that even though she did not apply early, her application has most likely been reviewed and to your point we can likely work with the school counselor for some info. I have a classmate from BC who’s son is a current Gabelli Scholar who applied RD. He did not have interest in BC until he got the scholarship and turned down Princeton. I am hoping my daughter’s stats are good enough to get her to be a finalist and an admission early in January, that would make waiting on the likely deferral from top choice much easier. University of Richmond has a similar scholarship with Nov. 1 deadline.

BTW from what I have seen, the numbers from ED accepted kids are not as crazy as the RD kids. 1400 SATs are getting in ED while 1550 are rejected RD. It is especially a disadvantage to apply RD as a legacy. They really want the legacy kids to have BC as top choice.

I’ve heard the same thing. My D applied RD last year with 1550 SAT, 5.3 GPA etc and was waitlisted. Fortunately, she had many wonderful schools to choose from. BC loves its EDs!

seems as though that is a classic example of yield protection. No way your daughter should not be auto accept. We are hoping that we have circumvented this by applying RD prior to the 11/1 deadline so as to qualify for Gabelli. The nice side benefits is the possibility of notification in early January. D24 certainly did not mention much if anything about family legacy and all that rah rah stuff that actually works.

It is really more of an example of having more qualified applicants than the school has available spots. This is happening at lots of selective schools. And I agree with msch2 that BC does love its EDs… Over half of this year’s freshmen class were accepted through ED1 & ED2. That did not leave a ton of open spots for RD. Best wishes to your daughter!

@JCTNJ Yes. I understand the glut of applications etc but as an alum I also know the internal dynamics of legacy applications specifically at BC. Legacy kids with stats above the 75% at BC who apply RD typically get waitlisted because BC is well aware that they are a back of to Ivies and in even worse cases ND and Georgetown. The exception being kids who get their applications in RD before Gabelli Scholars deadline which coincides with the Nov. 1 ED1 deadline.

Anyone know how many applications they historically receive for School of Ed vs. other undergrad schools? I don’t see it published anywhere. My DD applied ED1.

Assuming BC annual ED decision dates stays consistent, I hope they tweet out on Friday when decisions will be out next week.

An update on BC decision release. I got an email 15 minutes ago saying that decisions will be released early next week. I thought we would be alerted tomorrow but maybe that’s when the Twitter (X) notification comes out?

I also found this message hidden in the email. Does anyone know what this could be? There is no Thursday the 2nd this year (there was two years ago though).

ED I notifications will be released on the evening of Thursday, December 2. Learn more here.

Saw the hidden Dec 2 as well. The decision didn’t come out Dec 2 last year (instead was Tues Dec 6), and Dec 2 wasn’t even the first Thursday in December (first Thursday was Dec 1), so It must be a typo or accidentally left in from a previous year’s decision email.

I’m curious, however… does anyone know if decisions will be released 6PM eastern time again?

We received the ED email today as well, but didn’t see the “hidden” email. Can you explain that part was?

I heard it might be 7 pm on Tuesday. Not sure about the hidden message.

" *ED I notifications will be released on the evening of Thursday, December 2. Learn more here." was in the first line of the email when looking at it from your inbox, but when you opened the email it wasn’t there.

Obviously it’s wrong. Dec 2 isn’t a thursday

yeah, I got the email that said, “Thank you for applying to Boston College. Early Decision I notifications will be available early next week. You will receive an email to check your BC Applicant Status Portal once online decisions are officially released. Please note, decisions are released exclusively through the portal and cannot be communicated by email or over the phone. If you haven’t already, ensure you have created a password and can access your portal.”

no hidden message there! I’m guessing it’ll come out on Tuesday since last year was Tuesday? No clue tho, hopefully no later than Tuesday
