Boston College RD 2023

@runningryan It is hard to make sense of it all. Probably came down to the fact that they just had so many apps this year. After EA, they did say the avg accepted SAT was close to 1480, but still your S’s SAT2’s are fabulous and his SAT definitely right here. I hope he gets some great acceptances.

@waitinginnh22, that was beautiful. I cried when I read @BcUcIDK and then cried again when I read your post. My D got rejected and wait listed from a number of schools and though it hurts, we know she will be fine given the support and circumstances she was fortunate enough to be born into. I so appreciate your honest empathy and compassion for those who have a much tougher road than many of us in this college process.

@WLVGirl and @wisteria100 this past week has been very rough for him. He was rejected by Notre Dame and Northeastern. Getting waitlisted by hs top school hit him hard. I know trying to make sense of the admissions process is pointless. We have been told a number of times “he’s a great candidate” but the schools he applied to don’t share that opinion.

@privatebanker
Financial aid is out!
Portal said 43k BC scholarship, with a
3.5k work study and 3.5 loan, so basically 30k EFC! looks like a tough decision, OSU for 10k or BC for 30k?

Acceptance letters: did it seem personalized, like it was written specifically for the person? Did it bring anything about the applicant into the context of the letter? I mention this because something sticks out from my son’s letter.

Something doesn’t add up with your OSU price. Be careful how you are looking at these numbers. Look at the cost of attendance and the amounts of grants vs loans.

I’m pretty psyched, since BC meets full financial aid. My family is poor, even though my father and aunt are both graduates.<<<

YIKES! ? Are you saying there is a correlation between getting a degree from BC and one’s poverty level? :slight_smile:

@evergreen5
Sorry forgot to mention my mom works there so tuition is reduced from 10,000 to 5,000. Also had the Maximus ACT scholarship for $3,000 a year, so most likely 15k overall?

@heavyrunner That’s good news. And we weren’t that far off on the guesstimate. But higher aid in reality!

I can’t answer your second question. It’s a family’s decision.

Congrats again.

Hope et al: EFC is a federal construct which has little to do with private colleges that use CSS Profile. For example the federal EFC does not count home equity as an asset while Profile does. Did you run your numbers thru BC’s NPC?

@bluebayou Yes and it pretty much matched up with my efc… I was offered 14,000 less than their NPC said I would likely be expected to pay.

hope:

$14k…ouch.

You might send FA an e-mail and inquire if they have time next week for a ~15 minute call to help you understand better how they came up with their number and why its so different from the NPC…

good luck.

It’s really hard to decide between a private university and public. There are so many benefits of going to a private school, but the cost is equal to 2 years of a good public university.

I got that email and was denied…

@waitinginnh22 @STEM2017 @JWU1964 Thank you guys all for the support! Especially you @waitinginnh22 I really appreciate the kind words!

@BcUcIDK congratulations!! So happy for you. Thanks for sharing your story! Of all the threads I’ve been on I’ve enjoyed this one the most bc it’s such a great mix of people which is really what the college experience should be! I went to a public university (1st generation) for undergrad and grad school so my perspective on college is that it is what you make of it where ever you land. I loved my school. My husband went to a small private college, finished in 3 years, went to a state med school on a full ride and has a great career as a thoracic surgeon which he began with zero debt. He could have chosen elite med schools and came out with plenty of debt. He was too practical for that and has been just as successful as if he’d gone to those schools. The city we live in is big on private schools so our kids went that route. It has been a great fit for them but has set some really big ideas in play about the type of college you should attend. We try to remind our son that he will do well anywhere and college really should be largely about the experience while also getting an education. My point here for all rejected or waitlisted-painful and tough in the moment. Totally ok in the long run. My guess is no one on this thread has poor choices looming in their future.

@BcUcIDK if you end up at BC please keep us posted. If my S goes there too you are the kind of kid I’d love him to be surrounded by. So proud of you for reaching for the stars and going outside the box❤️

@nrsebayer Thank you so much for all the compliments, I’ve never felt so accomplished in my life :slight_smile: and Good luck to your son in his undergrad journey, wherever he ends up going! I’ve never seen such a supportive thread on college confidential :blush:

My guess is it is by ID number.

S1 waitlisted at Amherst. Last minute add for him so he’s choosing not to go on the waitlist as it wasn’t a high priority school. I’m happy bc it’s harder for me to get to than BC. Glad he’s started cutting. 4 to go next Thursday and we will have a decision finally!
