@privatebanker - Opps…Bapst! …
Daughter was admitted EA and intends to major in political science and then was admitted to George Washington University Elliot School of International Relations (with a scholarship equal to room and board roughly). She really liked both when she visited in the spring but is leaning towards BC at the moment. From a Jesuit prep and finds the curriculum at BC, especially the core requirements, more to her liking. Torn a bit as GWU has a great reputation in international relations and DC can be a fun city as well but not as many schools in the area. Doing admitted student days at both this month and keeping an open mind but I think the city of Boston may win her over. Also will have a good friend at MIT and likely a few others in the area by May 1. I will give her credit that she has shifted her focus a bit from “getting into the best school possible” to having a good overall experience in college. She was rejected by all of her reach schools and has withdrawn from the others where she was accepted. As a parent, I am glad her choices are cities. I want to have fun when I visit.
Awesome. If she was accepted into BC and GW for that super selective major she already got into two reach schools for everyone. 28000 students were rejected or waitlisted at BC alone.
@Yankgunner My two cents would be to focus on the overall environment and the overall quality of students at BC vs. GW. These schools have very very different student bodies and atmospheres. Admittedly, the Elliot School is perhaps more selective than other undergraduate schools at GW and has a reputation for international affairs (I would argue as a result of being based in DC as much as anything else as well as compared to other programs at GW). Certainly it would be better for in-semester internships in DC. BC is, in my view, in a different class - more selective and with a better overall reputation. GW is, by the way, almost 2/3 female.
My overriding view, rightly or wrongly, is to choose a college based on the college - not on some view of the relative strengths of academic departments. Majors can change, and undergraduate department rankings are pretty spurious. So much of it depends on the teachers you select and what you make of it.
I agree that your daughter should visit both and decide what her gut tells her is the right choice. The students are very different between the two schools.
Best of luck with two very good options!
Hello all, Throwing out this question in case there’s someone out there who has experience with both schools for undergraduate Business major (Maybe Finance). My impression is the BC is probably not much better. Any one have any insights?

Umass Amherst will cost $25,000 a year but I will be debt free.
Boston College will cost $40,000 a year and I will be with $40,000 of debt after 4 years.
Hi OP. Love both schools. UMass grad and BC 2022 parent.
B schools are both great. New isenberg center is off the charts if you haven’t seen it. Look online.
But there’s a gap between the two in a few industries coming out of the gate. So subjectively Carroll is better.
But you can be successful from either. And with about a 6k avg loan you personally take on for college that leaves a gap. You can only come up with around 24k out of the the 40k. Parents have to make up the difference.
Also as someone who knows. You do need some money while you are at school. Pizza. T pass. Sports gold pass at BC. Uber. CVS stuff. Beer. Spring break. Books. Computers. Laundry. It adds up.
I would suggest the best school for the price and a enjoyable lifestyle. And when you leave without debt it’s really good too.
So there is no right or wrong answer. But I would say isenberg over loans and potentially less enjoyable undergrad. Just my two cents.
i would say debt free, save your money for grad school. If you are possibly thinking of grad school it will ad to the 40K debt.
As a parent, its all about value prop, and to me, the private Jesuit BC is worth $40k more than UMass (over 4 years). But that is only if your parents can help you out with the debt payments. If you have to absorb the whole $40k, then don’t do it. (My limit on max educational debt is the federal loan limits.)
Take admitted Eagle day if you can. They are very organized with lots of info/presentations to answer all your questions. Definitely recommend. MY D a freshman right now at Newton. FYI
Avoid debt at all costs. Especially student debt.
I finally received my financial aid letter and sad to say I’m not going to be able to afford Boston ,20k a year is way too much for me.
Save your money for grad school. Go to UMass Amherst. $40K of debt is a lot of money and frankly I don’t see BC providing that much incremental earning power on an undergraduate degree.
@Yankgunner, if D wants political science, GW is the place she should be. Yes, BC is a great school and it’s great for connections in Boston, but if she’s set on poli sci, GW is right there in DC for internships. There are so many more opportunities there.
did anyone go to this Sunday’s accepted student’s day? curious what you thought…
Posters. Please take suggestions with a grain of salt from any brand new profiles with very little history. They have every right to share their thoughts. And you have every right to assume they are on the BC waitlisting too. Lol.
I have no skin in this game. $40 grand is $40 grand that can go to graduate school. Not everyone has that kind of money laying around.
Does anyone know when BC will report the 2023 class size (yield)? There are only about 350 roommate profiles (girls) but I think names are removed when there’s an agreement to room together and the dorm deadline is 7/1 versus the decision deadline of 5/1 (there’s no extra deposit to apply for housing but I guess some people wait anyway). Still, it seems low considering that there will be 1200 plus girls applying at some point.
