Boston College vs. Colgate

Hey guys.

So I'm down to Boston College and Colgate as the places I need to decide between.
Which would be better if I want to double major in Biology and Mathematics.
For the most part I am interested in the Pre-Med Program at both schools.

I just want to know which is better academic wise, but also in relation to opportunities available, and graduate schools admissions.

Thanx!

I would say Boston College has the leg up in all the things you mentioned, because it has more resources than a liberal arts school, in addition liberal arts schools are more known for the humanities and arts than math/science/pre professional.

Boston College is in Boston, so I’d think you’d have plenty of opportunity to volunteer at a hospital, or intern with physicians. And it’s more likely to be prestigious with grad schools.

I guess it depends on what you like. Colgate is VERY isolated in upstate NY while BC is near a major city. Size is also different with around 2500 at Colgate and 8000 at BC. I think I’d go BC just for the internship opportunities it provides which would be important for graduate school.

2800 at Colgate for what its worth. Yes very different than Boston. Totally different college experiences I’d imagine.

I’m biased as a Colgate parent, but its a great school with very strong academics, and as I also hires biologists, I’m familiar with the Colgate bio major as particularly strong. And students seem to have plenty of internship and research opportunies, like with NIH in DC.

So on quality of programs or work/intern possibilities, I do not necessarily agree with the posters above about the relative merits of BC. As the 2 schools are so different though, I suggest you visit both, and it will proably become evident which is more appealing to you.

BTW, I found this link regarding BC’s 73% med school acceptance rate a few years back:
[University Pre-Medical Program Enrollment Continues to Grow](Morrissey College of Arts & Sciences | Boston College)
I cannot find a comparable Colgate report, but ‘I think’ I recall hearing a similar number.

BC if money is not an issue.

Thank you everyone for the input.

I do not need to go visit both places, but I just wanted some outside input about prestige of both schools as well as their academics.

Which school would you say has better output in Medical Schools acceptances and/or general graduate school?

For undergraduate school the relative importance of the minutiae between schools is less important than what YOU like when you visit both of them. The important thing is where you will be happy, thrive and do your best. It matters NOT what others think, really.

Both schools are fabulous. You have two great choices. Congratulations. Good luck.

I’ve always thought Colgate was considered a better school or, at least, it is more selective. Less than a generation ago, BC was still considered a regional school with 80% of its students coming from MA, RI, CT. I don’t know where people are getting that BC has better intern opps.

Boston College was a commuter school back in my days and its a shock to see this prestige come about these past couple years. Sports has helped that school tremendously. Not to familiar with Colgate.

a few comparative stats from '09 US NEWS that I think are relevant in comparing schools, sorry none specific to med school placement success.

were do you guys find these USNEWS peer assessments?, please let me know. I have been googling it but no good results

I’m reading the hard-copy magazine which comes out once/year, also available on the premium online version of USNews (~$13/year if I recall).

Note that the peer score is controversial. Search on ‘peer score’ here on CC to learn more. Lots of threads on the subject.
