Boston College vs Macalester College

I will be majoring in neuroscience and doing a pre-med track. So I’m from New England, and Boston College is closer. Since I live an hour away from Boston I’ve spent most of my childhood there, and it’s a great city, and I think it’d be a great city to be near for attending college. I visited Macalester recently and while I do admit that Minneapolis and St. Paul are pretty, the city life sort of seemed dead to me? I don’t know. I’m also concerned about the size of Mac. It’s a pretty small school with only 2,000 undergrads whereas BC has 9,000. I did like the people at Mac, they were very friendly, and there are a lot of opportunities for pre-med students there. There’s also the fact that I’d only pay $1,500 for the 1st year at mac versus for BC I would pay $4100. But then I’d also have to account for the cost of traveling to Mac. I’ve also heard that people at BC are very preppy/snobby? So that is another concern I have. I will probably visit BC again, I visited in the summer time so I didn’t get a good feel for the campus vibe.

I was able to go to BC’s admit weekend and there’s no doubt that the student body made me nervous being the more athletic ‘jcrew’ type. I’m more of an artsy kind of person myself and not fitting in makes me nervous. I have spoken to students on campus and although there are a lot of preps the diversity is apparently there in interests. Every school has kids who are like minded! It’s just a matter of finding them.

Go visit BC campus as soon as possible. Take a day. Message some clubs. You will know a lot more by being there during school.
