So my choices have come down to BC and Chapel Hill, and I was hoping for a little help regarding their premed programs. All other things aside, which one would prepare me more for med school? Not just any med school but one of the most prestigious (Harvard for example…). I want to make sure I go somewhere that gives me a lot of opportunities as well as teaches me what I need.
Did UNC award you sufficient financial aid to attend?
Both are great I know that. I don’t know too much about UNC’s but I know BC has an 85 percent acceptance rate into med school typically. Obviously that doesn’t include kids who got weeded out but it still is very impressive compared to the national average of 48 percent.
All US MD med schools teach you wat you need. The education is flat.
You mentioned the BC denied your NCP waiver request. Did your NCP fill out the info? If not, you wont get aid.
Which school is the most affordable?
@thumper1 I did get a lot of money from UNC, about 40,000 in grants. But finance wise I can’t make a decision since I haven’t heard from BC, which is why I just want to know which, premed wise, is better.
@blueguy99 I didn’t know their stats were that high, so that definitely is a plus for me! Thank you!
You do know you can major in ANYTHING to go to med school?
You havent heard from BC because until your dad fill out the NCP info, you won’t get aid. Doesn’t matter…BC denied your waiver.
This is too funny. OP, put this quote on your calendar for 4 years from now; I wonder if you’ll recognize your 18-year-old self.
The real red flag here is the phrase “prepare me” as if some schools have a magic program or pixie dust that makes golden applicants out of their students. Kids that hope to outsource responsibility for their future like this often have unhappy outcomes.
I literally just wanted help in making this decision based on the programs… You can’t deny that some schools are able to give you more than others… That some schools have more resources and investments for their programs… That’s all I was wondering about… Exactly what the title says… Boston College vs UNC Chapel Hill premed…
Yes, some schools do Committee Interviews and write Committee Letters, but if you think that schools are really doing anything to place students into med schools, particularly top med schools, you’re mistaken.
@mikemac is right. Four years from now, if you’ve survived the weeding process, you’ll be hoping and praying that at least one med school (any US med school) accepts you.
BTW…the reason that UNC processed your aid is because UNC doesn’t require NCP info.
@mom2collegekids okay, thanks
Anyway, med school aside, I’m still looking for input on which school has the better program. Or even if they’re equal?
Well by USNEWS rankings they are equal. I don’t think UNC-CH has a pre-med major - most majored BS Biology when I was attending.
Both schools would be considered equal. Go to the affordable school. That sounds like UNC, unless somehow BC decides to give you the waiver.
Is your position that if BC won’t give you the needed aid that it’s off the table.
@mom2collegekids totally, there’s no way my family could afford it otherwise.
