Can someone tell me which university would be a better choice? I'm an international student and I've been admitted to both. I want to get a double degree in both Business and Science (biology probably) and is unsure which would be better in terms of future prospects and quality of education. I also heard that BU is a party school, is that true? Thanks

bumpity bump

Emory is elite…BU is not. I would go for Emory.

If its rankings you are after, that superficial thingie that so many here gravitate towards, then Emory is your choice. If its not, and you have other factors to consider, then look at both online, their webcams of campus, their programs, their professors and credentials, the CITY they are in: Atlanta v. Boston, weather, convenience for you to get there/get home for holidays, demographics of the schools and cost.

Nobody can choose except you. Its a subjective personal choice. BU is a fine school. Its substantially larger than Emory. But some people might prefer Boston to Atlanta, or vice versa.

Ghostbuster, BU is an excellent university. But I think Emory is better. Emory’s academic rating (not just ranking) is higher, both at the undergraduate level, and in the OP’s chosen fields of study. Furthermore, Emory has a nice campus, whereas BU’s campus is hard to define and not very cohesive. Atlanta and Boston are both nice cities, although I admittedly give Boston the edge. If one likes cold winters, BU has the edge, otherwise, Emory wins the weather battle. Transportation into and out of the US via either city is convenient as both have large international terminals.

Overall, I think Emory wins. But I agree that some students may fit in better at BU than at Emory. In the end, fit counts for a lot.

While the importance of prestige is vastly overblown on CC, this is one of those situtations where it may have a practical effect. Emory is clearly the best university in Atlanta, and one of the best in the sourthern U.S…

BU, in contrast, while a fine university in many respects, is nonetheless generally viewed as the 5th best university in the Boston area, trailing Harvard, MIT, Tufts, Brandeis and Boston College. Some people would also put Northeastern ahead of BU, although I think that is a minority opinion. Regardless of whether this ranking is accurate or fair, don’t minimize the impact of this perception. This perception has a significant impact upon the way BU students are viewed in the area and, frankly, the way that BU students view themselves. It also has a significant impact on employment prospects in the area, which may or may not be important to you as an international student.

Someone’s actually deciding between BU and Emory??? Seriously, BU is overshadowed by like 5 or 6 universities in Massachusetts whereas Emory, along with Duke and Rice, overshadows OTHER schools in the south. Yes, Emory>>>> BU for academics… but Emory wins in other categories too.
a)Academics
Emory> BU
b)Facilities
Emory> BU (look at the endowment at each)
c)Profs
Emory>BU (research into the world-class faculty at Emory)
d)Class size
Emory>BU (assuming you prefer smaller classes)
e)City
This is one category where it really depends… both are great cities.
f)Prestige
Emory> BU
g)Campus
Emory>BU(not even close… Emory has a beautiful campus and is located in a suburban area)
h)Overall academic institution
Emory>>>BU

Just to put things in perspective, I am easily turning down BC(which is better than BU) to attend Emory.

Go with Emory. Its not even close.

I was just curious because nobody around me (in Hong Kong) knows where or what is Emory but when I mention BU everyone’s like congratulating me and all, I wonder if employers will also be like this, around US and such. Thanks

No, Emory would be a better brand than BU.

And I bet your friends won’t know most of American prestige schools. Do they ever know Amherst? Or Middlebury? I seriously doubt it

blitzraider, are you telling me that you are basing your decision of what lay people think in Hong Kong? The only reason they may THINK they know BU is because it has Boston in the name. Do yourself a favour and choose Emory. This is one of the most lopsided “VS” threads I have seen in a while.

Soundwave made an excellent point… Williams in amazing… nobody I talked to here knows Williams… that speaks to their ignorance … not to the quality of the school.

In the United States, Emory has a much stronger reputation than BU (and is also stronger by pretty much all objective statistics such as average SAT scores, average high school GPA, acceptance rate etc.). For example, the 25-75 percential SAT score at Emory is 1310-1500 while the SAT range for BU is 1180-1360. Employers would be more likely to have heard of Emory than BU (and, as has been pointed out, even in Boston, I’m not sure that employers would pick a BU student over one from Emory). In addition, the Emory business school is much stronger than BU’s program and Emory’s biology department is excellent.

However, it’s possible that internationally, BU is a more known name–for example, in the QS World University rankings, BU is 54 while Emory is 90.

midatlmom, lets not pretend that World rankings have credibility… Dartmouth and Brown are ranked lower than BU…Dartmouth and Brown are more internationally better known than BU… I repeat, when you tell people you go to BU they will NOT say " where is that" because it has BOSTON in its name… this will give you a false sense of perception that BU is better than Emory, or Dartmouth, or Brown.

no take it from me…i’m international (from Indonesia)…and people knows about Emory…better yet, they kinda worship it (seriously)…if you’re fortunate enough to be admitted to Emory, then do yourself and your career a favor, pack your bags and head for Atlanta…Goizueta Business school is…out of this world…if I were you, I would choose Emory in a blink…your friends knowledge of the university means nothing, your achievement in getting an acceptance to Emory is exceptional

This is anecdotal but one of my friends last year said that he could also get into BU with Cs… but when I told him that I got into Emory, he said “wow, thats a really great school”… this is all in Canada.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but how is Emory compared to LSE in term of prestige in the US?

I think Emory would be higher in terms of prestige in the US. As a whole, the US population does not know much about foreign universities other than Oxbridge and Mcgill… with that being said, I am 99% sure in economics circles, LSE is extremely highly regarded.

Isn’t LSE much better?

Yes, I am aware that the general population is more likely to have heard of Emory. But to the employers in the financial sector, which university would provide me with the better starting point?

Boston College>Boston University?

^^Most people would say so. USNWR has BC at 34, Bu at 52.
