Hi guys, I would like to know whether the advantages of a BU student looking for internships in NYC or any other out of state areas (not in Massachusetts) are high. Does anybody know how difficult will it be? I don’t want to be around Boston all the time looking for my internship as I’m also interested in traveling to different places to help out.

Appreciate it… if anybody (especially someone who goes to BU) can answer me.

Thanks.

Anybody? Bump…

well i’m from california who attends BU and i got an internship back home. this is because i got lucky and met a friend here who had some connections so in theory it shouldn’t be all that hard. you should try, however, to make sure you know someone in the area that you hope to obtain an internship.

many times, employers quickly go through and scan your paper and the first thing that appears is your information. if they see you’re applying for a job in say…florida but your address says mass., you are less likely to get an interview or a response since you are farther. thus, you should make sure you tailor your resume with an address of a friend’s address you could use for the time being if they decide to send you stuff etc.

as a freshman, it will be hard to get an internship anyway. best of luck!

If that’s the case, then how do I start off meeting a peer who is acquianted or friends with the employer? Is it difficult?

well as i said i just happened to get really lucky. i mean what are the chances that i’d meet someone out of the 15k undergrads that lives near me in california and whos dad had some power in the company? not very. so just don’t worry too much about trying to meet the “right people.” if you do happen to meet someone, all the better!

but before i met my friend, i went to the career center which was really helpful. they can help you with everything from resumes, to cover letters, and giving you resources to help you get that internship. it’s especially helpful to go to the career center since they have specific relationships with certain companies that love BU students so it gets your foot in the door. if you happen to be in SMG, you can go to the Feld Career Center which is more business oriented internships but if you aren’t just go to the regular one for BU.
