Boston University vs USC

I recently got accepted as a transfer to USC from Boston University. I mostly did it because my parents went there and encouraged me to do it just to see. During my year at BU, I had just an okay time. I'm originally from the West Coast and definitely had to adjust to the East Coast culture. I do like Boston but never fully felt at home there. The winter was miserable and didn't get better till like the last week of school (mind you, I come from a cold place where it snows up to 5 feet, but gets warm by march). I found myself getting seasonal depression. However, I did make some really close friends that I really connected with, more so than friends I've had previously. Plus, during the fall semester walking around the city and going to the museums was really nice. Now I have to decide if I should return or go to USC. I know USC is generally a better school. I do want to end up on the West Coast, which I know USC would be better for. I just really don't know much about Los Angeles, USC, and the people. As a person, I'm more of an artsy individual. I couldn't care less about sports. I love music, films, art, etc. I'm just not sure how I'll fall into USC if I decide to transfer. So.. If anyone has any input on any of this, that would be great!

In my opinion college is really make to expand your confort zone so I would say that you should stay at Boston University but If you feel bad or depressed then go back to the West coast because you do nothing good when you are sad.

However, think about why you choosed BU, and every good moments you lived there. Then, ask you the following question : “Does going to USC/stay at BU worth it?”

USC by far. Higher ranking, better reputation, higher endowment, better stats. Since, you want to end up in the west coast, this should be a no-brainer choice.

USC is the better school, but transferring can be a pain. I would definitely do it if you want the better degree or if you don’t like Boston/BU.

You have never been to USC? I wouldn’t transfer unless you were reasonably sure you would like it better there.
Post your question in the USC and BU forums to get more specific feedback.

los angeles is very dangerous

The first year can be a big adjustment especially going across country and if you stay I expect you’d find your 2nd year much better. But the weather isn’t going to change, and if you are really prone to seasonal depression, maybe you don’t want to put yourself through that if you have another excellent option in hand. Probably you should get screened for general depression in either case.

You have made some comments that point to USC as a good school for you. Wanting to work in Calif, you will have the famous USC Alumni association connections. That’s something to take into consideration. So is the weather. You will find all kinds of people at USC, so don’t worry about making new connections. Just that you will be starting out fresh. You will find a lively arts scene at USC and in L.A. (I love going to the massive monthly Downtown Art Walk). In particular, because of the film school there will be lots of screenings of film and student work.
