Boston University vs William and Mary

Hey guys! Im currently trying to decide between BU and W&M. I got into both schools on the Pre-med track (I want to be a doctor and have known it for awhile). I have in-state tuition for W&M making it a fourth of the cost of BU. Boston is my favorite city and I hate Williamsburg but the cost is still the biggest issue. Can anyone comment on the difference between the pre-med programs and whether one will help me get into med school more than the other? I know they both have programs to directly send me to a med school (BU's med school for BU and EVMS for W&M) if I maintain a certain GPA and I get to skip the MCATs.Thanks!

I have a Son who is a Junior at W&M and a D who was just accepted to BU. Except for the city where you are going to study, the schools have very comparable good academics and reputation.

W&M is well known for its acceptance rates at professional schools and for those getting a PhD In fact I remember a stat that nearly 69% of W&M student go on for a graduate degree. I am sure BU is much less but you know that many students are not there to continue on in their education. BU has many more majors that could provide a good springboard to a job if med school does not work out for you.

W&M ( as in state you must know) is known for serious students who are more involved in campus activities that involved in a city life, hallmarks of a good applicant to Med School. Its majors are more general than BU so you are much more well rounded but a fall back is not apparent with a general bio major since they do not have a major like Bio Med engineering for a career path.

All this said, cost is ( or at least should be) a MAJOR consideration when comparing these schools. The fact that you can get in state tuition at one of the finest Public schools in the country should tip the scales in that direction ( even if the cost of attending BU is not a problem for your family ( it is not for us) We are now OOS for my son ( I was a VA resident till the very day he sent off to school) and the cheaper price of W&M still provides major savings each year to help in grad school. As an instate student you would save around 30K a year toward Med school, which is generally not really discounted much even for instate residents…

The cost is an especially big issue if you are going to have to come up with med school tuition. Boston is indeed a great city; if W&M is only one-fourth the cost, though, go there and spend some of the money you save on visiting Boston or doing a summer program there.

This is pretty much a no-brainer. W&M for 25% of the cost of BU? - Nothing can justify the extra expense of BU, especially for pre-med, no matter how much you hate Williamsburg. Even my wife would agree, and she’s a BU alum who loves her school.

The cost of W&M makes this an easy choice. BU is not worth the extra cost. I would go with W&M over BU at equal cost.

At the same cost I’d chose W&M. At a quarter the cost with med school ahead, W&M seems the clear choice.
With the money you save you can consider doing a summer program in Boston or even take a semester at another school in the US or abroad so you can go out of state for a while to study.

Im lucky enough to have my dad will be paying for Med school and undergrad but I dont know if he will pay for BU

it’s not where you go but what you do there. go to the cheaper school because you’ll still get a wonderful education.
