I’m going to be a senior in the fall and I’m going to be visiting Boston University this summer. If I like the campus, then I plan on applying Early Decision to BU hopefully in the school of communications–if not I can settle for the college of general studies. Can you chance me for both? Anyone with insight!!!

I’m white, living in Pennsylvania, my essays and recommendations should be solid. The only thing is as you will see my GPA dropped over 3 years. It’s so low for junior year because I was sick (had mono) and was sleeping basically everyday after school and sometimes just through the night. Studying this year was limited for me. My overall GPA is 3.6 though.

I also have only taken my SATs one time-I will take them again in October.

SAT SCORES:
Math: 610 (I would like to bring this up and likely will)
Reading: 640 (I would also, ideally, like to bring this up)
Writing: 730
Total: 1980

Does BU look at your score including writing???

More specifically, here are my grades from junior year:
JUNIOR YEAR GRADES:
AP English: B+
AP US History: B+
PreCalculus (not even an honors class, my very first non-honors class): B+
Honors Chemistry: C
Honors French 4: A
Clothing I (this class is just a regular class as well but there is no ‘leveling’. It was a major I took: A+

SENIOR YEAR SCHEDULE:
AP English
AP Government
AP Statistics
AP French 5
Journalism
Creative Writing

EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES:
9th grade (different building than 10-12):
SGA (Student Government)-Media Coordinator
Member of National Junior Honor Society
Played lacrosse for my school
10th-12th
Going on my 3rd year as a member of the Class of 2013 Class Cabinet (Student Council)
Going on my 3rd year as a member of Key Club at my school (120+ hours of community service done thus far)
Going on my 3rd year as a member of the Best Buddies ‘n’ Us Club-we work with the special needs students twice a month after school and spend time with them.
Going on my 2nd year as a member of the National Honor Society
Going on my 3rd year as a regular volunteer at my local Boys and Girls Club working with 5th and 6th graders in the “homework room”-I help them do homework, study, complete projects, etc.
Also, I am soon starting to volunteer regularly at a local soup kitchen (I have my training Saturday)

It looks like you have a very good change, especially if you take the SATs again and increase the score. My daughter got into CGS after applying to CAS with a 3.6 uw gpa and 1850 sat so I think you are ok.

She applied this year and will be a freshman this fall. Yes, she applied to CAS and did not get in but was accepted into CGS. Just remember though that there are other factors involved besides stats, essays and extracurriculars. They looks for well rounded students.

westie22 I know this reply is very very late- If you see this post, however, I was just wondering if you knew how many years of regular science and lab science your daughter took from 9th-12th grade? As of right now I only have 3 years of regular science and 2 years of lab science. I currently do not have any science scheduled for my senior year. It says on the BU website that they recommend 3-4 years of each. I was just curious as to whether or not me only having 2 years of lab science will heavily impact me during the application process for BU.

She took 4 years of science with 3 labs, but she was applying for psychology which is a science. What are you planning to major in? If it is a science you will probably need that 4th year.

I plan on majoring in communications. Since it isn’t a science I’m not too concerned with having a fourth year in science itself, I’m just concerned about only having 2 years of lab science. In my school district 7th-9th grade is in the middle school and 10th-12th grade is at the high school, although 9th grade does count on our transcripts. It’s because of that fact that there are no lab science choices for 9th grade, and unless I definitely took a lab science senior year I could only have 2 lab sciences total, and even if I did take a lab science senior year I could still only have a max of 3.

You can probably get into CGS with those stats sure, but the other schools will be harder. You said you plan on majoring in communications and COM is definitely harder to get into than CGS. Basically CGS accepts the people that are close but don’t get into the other schools. And your fine with 3 years of science and 2 years of lab. I’m pretty sure it doesn’t matter all that much especially if your school didn’t offer it.

sak09-thank you for replying to my post. my school does offer a 3rd year of lab but they don’t offer lab freshman year—therefore i could have taken lab but only if i opted to take science my senior year which is not required and not something that i really wanted to do. if i were to be accepted to CGS and go to BU, could i transfer into COM after 2 years?

sak09- I don’t know if you’ll see this, but random question-- do you know anyone at BU that had a downward trend in his or her GPA during high school but was still accepted into at least CGS right off the bat? I know that’s kind of a strange question but do you think that the fact that my GPA has been on a downward trend (although the rigor of my classes has increased) will be something that significantly hurts me in the application process?

lol I had a down ward trend in my junior year, from sophmore year and got into BU’s ENG program no problem. Not a terrible drop from A to a C but an A to a B.

thanks lalaz1000! yeah the C i earned in chemistry was unavoidable…I really put my heart and soul into that class as much as I could dealing with what I dealt with. it was a struggle for me nonetheless. Other than that C I only dropped from A’s to B+'s so my GPA didn’t even come close to dropping to a C average or anything. that makes me feel a little bit better, thank you

Question though-how many years of regular science and lab science did you have when you applied?

you should be fine, and with applying early and dont get in ED i would still say you have a good chance of getting a scholarship for RD (if you apply before a certain date you are more favored for scholarships) I applied early (not ED) and received a significant scholarship in CAS and my SAT is spot on w/ yours and my GPA was similar good luck!

I’ve had a C before, it’s not going to kill you. I got a C in my Sophmore English class haha. But anyways, when I applied I had Earth Science, Biology, Chemistry, AP Bio, AP Physics and AP Chemistry.

So to sum it up, I had 6 science courses and all of them had lab.

Oh I just fully read your post, you are going to apply to COM. Don’t even worry haha, your EC’s are going to be great to get in. Your SAT is in range for the average admittance at BU! If you can get it higher you are definately a shoe-in for COM’s program.

Also if you hate math, you have opted out of the Math Requirement for COM :D! Only need a 560 to get exemption! But try to score higher, cause remember you are competing against thousands of students!

thank you so much lalaz1000! i’m still a little nervous about the science requirement because according to college board you need 4 science w/ 3 labs (i think at this point i’m just repeating myself, sorry ahaha) but we’ll see! i might email the admissions office there and try to set it straight whether or not it’s 100% required. i definitely am going to try and get my math SAT score up… i’m pretty sure i’ll be able to. that would be awesome to opt out of the math requirement for COM… a major weight off my shoulders! haha we’ll see. thanks again!
