Is Bu a possibility?

Hi I really want to go to BU But I don’t think I will beable to. I got to a very competetive HS and right now my cumulative gpa is a 2.96. I saw on college board though 10% of the people that go to BU have between a 2.4 and 2.9 GPA. Also the reason why it’s so poor was becasue I bacame very depressed during my sophomore into my junior year. Im on the first quarter of my senior year and I am thinking I will get a 3.7 give or take. Also I prettyy much bombed my SAT’s CR: 380 W540 M570 The CR WILL go way up my PSAT’s werent even that bad. I am going to try to do some hard core prep for them in october which are coming up, then I will take them again in december. Also I will be taking the ACT. It also says BU requires subject tests, that is something I know little about, which ones do I have to take, science is my best subject so if I had a choice I would take science. I really appreciate any help. If I applied to BU, I would do ED to increase my chance. Thanks a lot.

Retake the SATs and try to get at least 600 on each section....and about SAT subject tests I think you have to take like two subjects, since you're interested in science, you could take Physics and Biology and Chemistry, or whatever else you like....maybe it was just me but I found the subject tests a LOT easier than the SAT, so yeah dont worry about it...and after you do all that, even if you don't get into any of the four-year colleges you can still get into CGS, so don't worry, just concentrate on increasing your SATs and Gpa for now....

oh and in case you're wondering, CGS = College of General Studies, there are a couple of threads on CGS, so check them out....

Unless the GPA goes up for sr. year and the SATs go up, you have a mediocre chance.

is that a 2.97 UNWEIGHTED? or weighted? I have a pretty close unweighted (3.1) but my weighted is 3.8ish which makes all the difference, haha... (and reasonably high SATs to make me kindaaa believe BU is a saftey)

I dunno... are you taking honor/AP courses?

Right now I am taking honors enlglish, and its my only honors class through HS I also don't know what this weighted, unweighted stuff is. :(. My school is very strict and holds the prerequisites requirements high. For exampl, I wanted to take AP BIO and I needed an A in biology and I had a B+. I'm really working on my GPA although it will barely move my cumulative average, it will show the college what I can really do. I am really going to work on this SAT stuff now. I'm trying everything I can, if only BU could know what I went through, my freshman and sophomore year. I have an SAT book, and every day I try to do random problems from it. I honestly think I am improving. I just don't know what else to do. I wish I could meet a professor at BU. anything to increase my overall chances of making it in. I am going to do early admission to show that I am really interested. Any other ideas? I hope Im doing the right thing

You should really make sure your Guidance counselor's letter emphasizes what a hard, passionate worker you are. She should also add something that explains why you became depressed, if there is a reason.

Best of luck!

Check the BU web site about the SAT 2s since most colleges only require them if you are not submitting an ACT score. Let's be honest and admit its a real stretch for you so make sure you are applying to other schools. Worst case scenario is that you get rejected but get an excellent GPA your Freshman yr elsewhere and then try and transfer to BU.

On applications there is a section to "explain" anything about your grades. This is your chance to explain about the depression and point out the upward trend since you have gotten back on track. Emphasize that positive aspect. Do not write about it in your esssay and I'd be careful with your GC. If he is going to mention it make sure you know how he will explain it. There are several web sites like College Board that offer free on line practice tests so try that too if you aren't able to get SAT/ACT tutoring. Good luck.

So yea. my girlfriend had this college as one of her picks. So I'm trying to get accepted here. FYI shes is waaaaaaaaaay smarter than I am. lol

I currently have a SAT score of 1730. Not looking good so far but I plan on retaking. 550 on critical reading and 550 on verbal

For extra curricular activities I have been head of the media committee in church and vacation bible school. JSA member, stock club member, promotions of literary magazine. assisstant director in the school year movie. Also a member of westborough high school film club

In school I'm taking a bunch of science and math classes to raise my GPA [ ap bio, ap stats, honors physics, honors calc] and not one of them have anything to do with Film or television. My GPA using the collegeboard scale, is a 3.3.

As I just said I'm taking a bunch of hard classes and this is a big jump for me. and right now I'm failing AP stats and physics.

I'm trying to major in film production btw. Also i hear BU has very few students in their film program so Im guessing thats a good thing for me?

NYU, Syracuse, American University, are the only other options. and my gf is applying to brown, NYU, BU, BC, Colombia, Welsley. OMG I dont want to lose her! I dont mind as long as we're in the same city.

so what is BU for me? a reach or a target?

You should have made your own thread. With that sat, you have a shot at CGS depending on your GPA.

whats CGS?

btw uhm do i still have to take SAT twos because i know fro teh other colleges if ur doing film it is not required of you to take SAT 2's but instead submit one of ur works.

CGS is the college of general studies.

jpod doesnt even go to BU..but he knows his stuff.. nice lol. good luck with ur app..

im a frosh in CGS this year and i love it.. being in boston is an awesome experience.. and the whole notion that people make fun of CGS kids is all bull...we basically own west campus. haha

Does BU defer students into CGS like NYU? Or do you apply directly to CGS?

Thanks.

I'm applying ED Directly to CGS, but you can be deferred into CGS too.

a lot of student who are undecided apply directly to CGS..

but you can apply to any school in BU (CAS, SMG, COM, etc.) and be deferred into CGS

Thanks for the replies.
