Boston Visit

Ok, I am going to boston to visit colleges soon (maybe). I want to do engineering. So far I have Northeastern, WPI, and Boston U as schools that I want to visit officially (aka tour + info session). My SAT was 720 650 650 (math reading and new writing respectfully) for a total just above 2000. My GPA is right around 3.2. I am african american if that matters....are their any other engineering schools in the area that I should look at? I might also go to McGill in Montreal (was my first choice earlier in the year, but now I am not sure about my chances for engineering there (or anything else) or the grade deflation). Also in general I am looking for more match/safety schools anywhere in the country, can anyone recommend any for me to look at? Thanks.

an african american engineer? you're in. don't even worry about safeties

lol I wish that were true..what school were you referring to exactly?

You might want to swing by Wentworth as a safety as long as you're at Northeastern. It's right there.

Any particular reason that MIT's not on your list? It might be a reach, but why not take a look?

Well, yes, MIT would be a reach(especially for an underachieving 3.2, even if my courseload is decently hard), and I (perhaps prematurely?) deemed it impossible. The thing is my parents cannot take much time off (long story). I will certainly swing by the admin office, but I am not sure if I want to take half a day for a tour if I stand no chance of admittance. If it would be worthwhile I might try to get my parents to just let me stay there another day or two (by myself if needed) so I can see MIT. I'll check out wentworth online, never heard of it so thanks. Maybe I will swing by.

Swing out by Needham and visit Olin College.

About staying a day extra to visit MIT: Their website lists an overnight program in which prospectives get to stay with current students for one day during certain days of the week and times of year. I haven't had luck posting web addresses in this forum, but go to: mit (dot) edu, then click on "undergraduate" under the "admissions" heading, then the yellow box at the top that says "visiting MIT", then "overnight program" in the yellow box at the left. Boston also has a student hostel very close to a subway station, though I think you need to be attended by an adult guardian to stay there (though if your parents called them you might be able to ask for an exception).

Don't forget about Tufts. It's just a T ride away from MIT and two from Northeastern. Their engineering program could be a great match/slight reach for you.

While you're in the area, Trinity in Hartford has a highly ranked engineering program, even as an LAC. You'd be in (match, not safety), even with that GPA.

boston u is a match for you definetely. i mean, you'd have a good chance of getting in with your stats as a white guy, but your african-ness puts you in over the top.

lest i sound politically incorrect, african-americanness

Northeastern is a safety for you.
