Bother applying

It isn’t just another essay – they are NOT on the Common App. It is restating all your activities, awards, etc. in a different format. And it is getting separate letters of recommendation from teachers on a separate form even though you already got them. It is as much work as the Common App in addition to doing the Common App for other schools.

I’ve already went through this. It’s not a major thing to readd stuff, especially when your school forces you to make a resume. As for seperate letters of recommendation, that doesn’t even make sense. I can use the same ones, teachers just have to share with guidance, guidance prints it out, and mails it. It doesn’t seem super hard.

Then go for it, and good luck. You asked for opinions and I gave one, but your choice is your own. Keep in mind that your thread is entitled, “Bother Applying”. In my opinion, “No.”

My daughter is pretty buried with 5 AP classes, the Common App, our local state school and honors app college plus ECs, so she is putting off the separate Georgetown app until after Jan 1.

Let me just add that the CUNY app is not the same because it is your safety, unlike Georgetown.

Let me give one more source to consider – the Student Profile linked below. I am going to assume your CR and Math SAT scores are in the 600s since your overall is 1600. Your class rank is 28/103, which is in the 3rd decile of your class. According to the class of 2016 profile from the Georgetown web site, people with your stats were admitted at the following rates: 8/88 + 0/40 + 1/18 + 1/47 + 1/33 = 11/186 or 6%. My guess is that all 11 of those students admitted with those stats have hooks (legacy, athlete, or URM). If you have one of those, you certainly have a shot.

Never said CUNY was a safety
URM?
Also yes, my CR is somewhere near their while math is somewhere near 400

@Swag87

Just to be 100% clear, for GTown that 6% cited by @Daddio3 is only 6% of people with stats that low that got in, and you can bet that most of those 11 were indeed basketball players. That means that of the total class admitted, people with your stats got in at a rate of well less than that 6%, maybe less than 1%. So like others have said, it is your time and money but pretty much a waste of both.

As far as American and GW, they are similar schools as far as admission stats, with GW being a bit more selective. GW has a middle SAT (25-75%) of about 600-700 for each section and middle ACT of 27-31. Similar stats for AU are 580-680 and 26-30. Almost no real difference, but you are a bit on the low side for both schools. Your math score is really low for either of these schools. They both have good departments in the areas you mention. The biggest difference is probably atmosphere. AU has a “regular” college campus while GW is mostly concrete. Definitely a very different vibe at each.

I would put your chances at either school at a little less than 50-50, but that doesn’t mean much. You might be a great writer. I do hope you are having your essays proofread by a teacher or someone excellent in spelling and grammar. I don’t normally point out errors of those kind on the Internet, but you misused there/their/they’re almost every time. That can kill an application, which is the only reason I bring it up in your case.

Yeah my teacher will be reread my edited essay. They’re are many issues that can arise from this.
