Should I bother applying
1600 SAT out of 2400
3.75 W which makes me 29/103
8 college level classes including AP
Taking SAT subject in Dec and took SAT again in Oct
Taking ACT at end of month
Only one at in my school’s history to apply so far, it seems but we have had a few ivy students
EC: work for all years, Taft prep school summer school in 10th, and volunteer for 10th & 11th
Definitely a reach, but why not. Almost everyone’s top school is a reach. I went to GU 30 years ago. I have no idea how I got in. It changed my life. Go for it! If you are not admitted, what have you lost? A day filling out the app and $75 fee. Well worth rolling the dice, IMO.
Virtually no chance of admission but it is your time and money.
Your October SAT score will make all the difference.
@NedMart Guess that is true, what was your SAT score. Will it help that an Alum will be writing a rec letter for me?
@TomSrOfBoston hence why I asked the question
@AboutTheSame thanks, guess I will find out in 10 days will ACT also matter?
Absolutely. Use the best one. Some people seem to do significantly better on one rather than the other.
Alright, thanks
You have to submit all test scores to Georgetown. The university does not participate in Score Choice.
@gradygrad that includes Subject Tests?
Back then it was just verbal and math. I had a 520/800 on the verbal piece and 690/800 on the math section. I graduated squarely in the middle of my class in HS. No special hooks.
I will say this, if you do get into a high reach school, the chances of you struggling early are very high. I almost did not make it through my first semester. Judge what type of person you are and what you would do when confronted with Ds and Fs. I graduated with a 3.3 GPA, but there were a lot of blood, sweat and even some tears along the way.
@Swag87 : yes, that includes subject tests. See second paragraph under “Test Requirements” https://uadmissions.georgetown.edu/firstyear/preparation
@NedMart I’ll be able to live with myself. Ds get degrees. Still, I get what you mean and I am willing to work through i it. Freshmen year tends to be bad in general.
@AboutTheSame Thought so
Question for both of you, would I have a better chance at AU or GWU since they are test op and yet still DC schools?
Probably. I hate offering an opinion on something like that. I have no experience in admissions and my opinion means no more than yours. Your stats might be more of a match for those two; especially if you can drop out that 1600 SAT and offer a higher SAT/ACT.
Well do you know anything about those schools?
Nope. My wife was an adjunct at AU many years ago. but I do not believe that either is a GT peer. Does not mean that they are bad; just not as good.
Is their any way that she could tell me more about the school? I know their not as high as GU but their still pretty solid.
I’m applying to Georgetown this year, and also checked out GW and AU this spring. I want to first say that I will be applying to Georgetown and GW. GW is an amazing institution. It is in between the world bank, the national mall, and a whole slew of other important DC hubs. It is also a more competitive school than American, and I believe a far nicer school in general. This is my personal opinion. I would still apply to Georgetown if you love dc, because Georgetown is absolutely amazing. You never know, if you write some killer essays good luck to us both! Maybe see you in DC next year!!
Yeah, maybe I will see you on DC. From what, I have heard GW and AU are on the same level so my question is which one has a better pol sci and finance dep? How is GW more competitive in your opinion? I’m just going to apply all 3 and wish for the best, good idea?
If you were my kid, I would not have you apply to Georgetown.
- They appear to be even more focused on class rank than test scores
- Your current SAT is about 500 points too low – if you pull a 32 ACT, SAT to 2100, and SAT 2s are 700+, then you might have a shot with that class rank.
- It is an entire separate application from most other schools since they don’t take the Common App, so it is a lot of extra work.
But remember, I didn’t say you should not apply. I said if you were my kid, I wouldn’t have you apply. I take all that extra time and try to crush my common app essay and essays for my other top schools.
I can understand that but it’s not really a lot of extra word since it’s just another essay. By your logic, I shouldn’t apply to a CUNY school either.
