I was thinking that I would apply to the University of Washington (I am out of state), but as I browse the website, it seems as if they only calculate UNweighted GPA’s, so for GPA I am screwed (a bit above a 3.1 or 3.2 unweighted), but my SAT scores are way above that GPA ‘range’ of admittance on it’s school chart http://www.washington.edu/students/uga/fr/reqs/fr_admit_graph.jpg
Anyways, do you think I should bother applying? I’m feeling EXTREMELY doubtful now. Any opinions?

it never hurts to try. :) but if you do, apply as early as possible, because they have rolling admissions.

They do look at the whole package. I would not rule it out solely on the one factor.

Also, gpa can never be considered alone. Some high schools grade tougher than others. They will look at your class rank and your high school's profile to see what your gpa really means. The high school profile is a sheet that your hs send to the colleges along with your transcript. It has info such as gpa distribution, # of AP's offered and so on. You can get a copy from your GC/Registrar at your high school.

A lot of what you read on CC is about the extremely selective colleges. After you get out of the top 10-15 schools, things become much more sane. I don't mean that the colleges are not as good, but the mad rush to get into a brand-name school drops off very steeply after the name recognition decreases.

I looked, and I don't think that UW has rolling admissions unfortunately.

^ Haha, I've noticed :)

Thanks a lot, it would be rather unfair for a school to look mostly at GPA--I hope some don't. I feel a bit better now, and I'm going to apply, even if it is just for the heck of it.

You should apply. I just graduated in June. I'm from CA and was accepted to U of W. I sent in my app right before the deadline. When I was filling out my app I had called U of W to discuss the unweighted GPA's. They said not to worry because they take into account the difficulty of your coursework. Anyways, my unweighted 9-11 GPA was 3.67, weighted 4.0, and my SAT's were low (1250) and I still got in. I don't think it's that difficult to get in. My cousin also got in 2 years ago and he had less than a 4.0 but had better SAT scores. I ended up passing on U of W and am going to go to UCSD.

I don't know much about the school, but generally speaking, if your class rank is high enough, it won't matter if your GPA is that low.

It's ALWAYS worth applying.

I'm not talking about U of Wash which is a very good school, but the vast bulk of US colleges are not really selective. There are about 3500 4-year colleges in the US. When you put all of the tier1, tier2, and tier3 schools together, they still make up less than 10% of the colleges. Most of the US colleges think that SAT's of 1000/1600 are perfectly acceptable.

There are about 1.4 million hs students graduating each year and there is a funnel leading them into only 10 brand-name schools. After you get away from that, things happen in a sane, reasonable manner.
