Bowdoin 2014/2018 Decisions Thread

freaking out!!!
Why do I feel like I’m just going to get rejected from every school? I’m filled with anxiety about this…

[Bowdoin’s announcement about the date for release of the RD decisions should be here](http://www.bowdoin.edu/admissions/apply/announcements.shtml</a>).

Decisions will be emailed March 21st at 7pm EST! Good luck everybody!

I’ll need all the luck I can get! Good luck to you too, softcalculator.

Ok I don’t want to be that annoying person who is speculating but I was wondering if everyone has the class finder tab on their Polaris account.

^^ Isn’t there since day one?

I have it, but I’m pretty sure I’ve had it all along? I’ve never really taken notice.

I just logged on for the first time haha

I’m actually really curious as to how much geographic diversity/ethnic diversity factor into the early writes. Anyway, here goes:

Accepted - Early Write & Faculty Scholar

Objective

[ul]
[] SAT I (CR, M, W): 2330 (800 CR, 760 M, 770 W)

[]SAT II: Math 2 (780), Chemistry (780), Literature (710)
[]Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
[]Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 3/400

[]IB (place score in parentheses): n/a

[li]Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): NMF, AP Scholar w/ whatever, NHS, nothing too unique[/li][/ul]

Subjective

[ul]
[]Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses): speech/debate for 4 yrs (individual events captain) w/ somewhat decent awards in LD debate & original oratory, piano for 12 yrs w/ various local piano competition awards, ___ academy of performing arts member for 9 yrs (pianist and violinist in chamber music/orchestra), violinist from grades 2-11, school chemclub for 1.5 yrs (co-founder and co-president), young democrats for 2 yrs (vice president), school band from grades 9-11 (pianist in jazz band, flutist in symphonic band/marching band), quiz bowl for 4 yrs, link crew 11th grade

[]Summer Activities: gustavus adolphus college summer speech institute before junior year & took home 1st place in public address at the end-of-camp tournament, 2013 nfl national debate tournament, summer@brown 2013, nothing else much
[]Essays: common app essay was about striking a balance between my chinese and american backgrounds, idk about this one because it kind of flaunts that i’m an ORM but it was pretty well written i think. bowdoin supp was on connection to place and i talked about how i’m not religious but i love a local church chapel because that’s where i play most of my piano recitals. basically, i found faith in music instead. maybeeeee risky but well.
[]Teacher Recommendations: i asked my ap lit teacher (who was also my acc. english 2 teacher sophomore year) and my ap chem teacher from last year. i didn’t see either, but i’m assuming they were average to good
[]Counselor Rec: not really sure about this. i think it was probably decent but i haven’t really talked to my counselor at all before this year when i started freaking out about college apps, so she doesn’t really know me on a personal level.
[]Additional Rec: n/a
[li]Interview: n/a[/li][/ul]

Other

[ul]
[]State (if domestic applicant): South Dakota
[]School Type: public
[]Ethnicity: Chinese
[]Income Bracket: 110k
[li]Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none. maybe piano? i sent in a music supplement w/ two pieces.[/li][/ul]

Reflection

[ul]
[]Strengths: test scores, grades, maybe music and debate
[]Weaknesses: no volunteer work, possibly recs, possibly a shifty course load since i waited to take classes, and maybe my extracurriculars are iffy when applying to top colleges (?)
[]Why you think you received your decision: state diversity tbh. the note on my letter said that she liked my essay about striking a balance between two cultures so hopefully my essays were decent?
[]Where else you have applied and/or have been accepted/rejected: no flat out rejections as of yet. accepted: bowdoin, grinnell, university of minnesota-twin cities, gustavus adolphus college. waitlisted: uchicago. waiting to hear back from: harvard, yale, princeton, brown, williams, amherst, middlebury, and carleton.
[/ul]

General comments/advice/hindsight:
in hindsight, i should have really tried to figure out what i was doing with my life before senior year. i go to a public school in south dakota, and everyone around here basically stays local for college - meaning university of south dakota, university of minnesota, and possibly kansas or iowa if you’re feeling really adventurous. i’d never really thought about college very much before this summer, and i never realized how disturbingly scary college admissions actually are until i started filling out the common app in september/started reading college confidential and saw the profiles of insanely accomplished high schoolers. i guess my advice is to not procrastinate. i didn’t bother looking at schools until the fall of my senior year, and that was definitely not a good idea. also, i’m terrible at actually doing things and i spent 95% of my time worrying about college and 5% of my time actually doing productive things. i wrote my bowdoin supplement on december 26th. so do your research, figure out what schools are a good fit for you (and don’t just gauge decisions off of name recognition, something i didn’t realize until august), but at the same time, never let anyone discourage you from your dreams. you’re more than just a number, more than just a laundry list of awards. i’m unsure as to how helpful these posts are because every single person is unique; simply replicating what someone else has done doesn’t guarantee you admission. ultimately, you never know until you try. do what you love, and make sure that same sort of passion comes through somewhere in your application. present yourself as a person, not as some sort of glorified superhuman.

anyway, i’ve wanted to get out of the midwest for my entire life haaaaa. i was terrified i wouldn’t get into a single one of my east coast schools, so i’m so glad about bowdoin. good luck to everyone still waiting! i hope the best for you all.

Creepy, I began writing my essay on the 26th Dec also. I found out about Bowdoin super late, which sucks, as it’s an awesome school. Definitely in my Top 3. I wish I could’ve interview. Congrats slothz. :)

Good luck everyone!

Thanks, you too!

Anxiously awaiting my decision
