Anthony Award (on a side note, message to all sophomores and juniors: if your school usually does not have people getting different book awards and specific college awards, get a teacher to try to nominate you for one because they’re named awards and based primarily on grades)[/li][/ul]

Subjective
[ul]
[]Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses): Various programs related to medicine [Volunteer work at a hospital for a considerable amount of time, DukeTIP Tropical Medicine & Ethnobiology Course, other local programs in which I was able to shadow various medical professionals], State-specific Mock Trial (Team Captain) and Congress programs, Key Club (Treasurer), Technology Fair, other minor clubs
[]Job/Work Experience: Worked for a start-up website with
[]Volunteer/Community Service: included in extracurriculars
[]Summer Activities: included in extracurriculars
[]Essays: Worked a ton on my common app essay, but wasn’t sure what admission officers would think of me. Thankfully it turned out positively in this case. My Bowdoin-specific essay turned out well as well.
[]Teacher Recommendations: Chose the two teachers whose classes I participated in the most and also had very good grades in. My History teacher’s rec was apparently very good, as my college counselor told me she now uses it as an example of a good rec.
[]Counselor Rec: I knew my counselor very well from going in to her office often, and it was probably good as well. I don’t really know how much this affects the process though
[]Additional Rec: None
[li]Interview: On-Campus interview, went very well and probably helped my application. My interviewee was very nice and made me comfortable enough to really show her who I was as a person.[/li][/ul]

Other

[]State (if domestic applicant): AL
[]Country (if international applicant):
[]School Type: Private
[]Ethnicity: White
[]Income Bracket: the very little aid if any bracket
[]Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): perhaps geographical diversity as my common app essay was characteristically Southern, but I believe that most admission officers don’t put too much weight into this
[/ul]

Reflection
[ul]
[]Strengths: large amount of work in medically themed activities, test scores and grades
[]Weaknesses: not many leadership positions
[]Why you think you received your decision: Well, that’s a bit difficult for me to really put a finger on. I think the interest I have shown in Bowdoin probably helped tremendously. All I know is that I am happy to have been accepted.
[li]Where else you have applied and/or have been accepted/rejected: [/li][] Accepted to: University of Alabama, Ole Miss, Birmingham Southern, with good enough scholarships to each to make them very easy to go to from a financial standpoint
[li]Waiting for: several schools similar to Bowdoin (Middlebury, Amherst, Williams, Davidson, Washington and Lee), two Ivys (Brown and Princeton), Vanderbilt.[/li][/ul]

General comments/advice/hindsight:
Bowdoin is in a group of about 4 that are tied for my top choice, so I’m extremely happy to be getting this acceptance as I could really see myself going there. In hindsight, I’m very glad that I visited many of these colleges last summer with my mother because I’m not entirely sure that I’ll be able to go to any of the April visit days/weekends due to my tight schedule. Also, in hindsight after reflecting upon some of the schools that I applied to (not including Bowdoin of course), I would say not to apply to any schools that you really can’t see yourself going to because it wastes not only your time and money but also the time of the admission officers and destroys the chances of students who would really want to go there. Anyway, good luck in your application process and thanks for reading!
