I know one person whose guidance office Bowdoin called for first quarter grades. I think that this person made Bowdoin final list and that Bowdoin is trying to skim off any kids who fell apart senior year. Did anyone else get calls?

I DIDNT EITHER!
but i know someone who did too

Im not exactly sure why but i think it could have to do with the last decisions they are making. Like where they want a little more information than they were given to see how things are going this year.
I think that for the most part most decisions have been made already....but i am really nervous now

Do you think that if they didn't ask for your grades they were confident with a decision one way or the other? and it was just the last few who they weren't sure about that they asked for them?

Someone from the Bowdoin admissions department explained a couple of years ago (I think it was in the Bowdoin student paper) that the admissions department examines academic performance more closely if the applicant has not submitted SAT scores. IIRC, it has to do with the fact that they have less information about the student's intellectual capabilities and therefore want to be as certain as possible that the applicant's academic performance as measured by grades is up to par.

or reject or defer (what can i say? i'm an optimist..)

but thanks. fingers crossed that your right.

I wonder what they'll think of my first quarter grades? I got a 99 and a 98 in AP Gov and AP Psych respectively but then I also got an 86 in Spanish H and an 87 in Indep Study Humanities. I got low 90s in all my other classes.

It ends up being lower than average for me, but i always do worst first quarter..

Yeah, my councilor seemed to think that they were asking for everyone's. Now we know that they're up to Idaho, though. I wonder what order they're going in.

I have no idea what kind of order they are going in. Haha....definitely not alphabetical
didn't Bowdoin kinda restructure their admissions office this last year?

maybe they just go by like the states with the most applications to the least.

this is somewhat off topic, but does anyone know how admissions looks into grades? in other words, do they care more about certain years than others? i didn't do too well my freshman year but my improvement was drastic (meaning C's to straight A's). Overall my gpa is a low 3.5 (unweighted with 6 APs) but I have a 4.0 when just calculating sophomore and junior years together. Also, my first quarter this year was mainly all A's with the exception of one A+ and two A-.

Sorry I'm getting too specific but basically I'm wondering what people think the admissions cares about more: Consistency or Improvement/Progress?

it never said on the Bowdoin or Common App websites that we had to send first quarter grades. How were we supposed to know to?

And to answer your question..I think in general upward trend are always good (especially when they're as steep as yours) and i think its even better that you had a legit excuse for it.

I doubt your GPA will hinder your acceptance.
