I know Bowdoin has a fantastic summer music program, but how about the music program during the year? Is it a good liberal arts school option for a strong musician who wants to play (flute) but not go to a conservatory?

Most of the Bowdoin references are about the summer program, but there’s some (not a tremendous amount) within these:

My husband and son visited and, while they looooooved Bowdoin, the music program is not very strong, at least performance-wise. In particular, the orchestra doesn’t even practice all year. Each semester is divided into thirds, if I recall correctly, and various ensembles rehearse and perform in a designated third. Orchestra, thus, is only one third. That said, the performance space is fabulous.

A HS jazz band-mate of my D went to Bowdoin. When he returned over winter break (now almost 2 years ago, so things may have changed), he reported that the Bowdoin jazz band was not as good as his high school’s jazz band. (The HS had only about 125 kids per class, so the HS is substantially smaller than Bowdoin). I think he did like Bowdoin, however.

We visited, toured and heard the info session. Both the Admissions person and the tour guide seemed a bit stiff, stuck up and full of themselves. Their cheer at hockey games against Colby, is apparently that Bowdoin’s students got higher SAT scores.

It was mighty cold (in the teens) in mid-March.

i love bowdoin! it’s freezing (hence the polar bear as a mascot), but the music program is great in my opinion! i visited during the summer, and got to hear the violins in the orchestra practice. it was so beautiful!
