Can anyone tell me about the classical music scene at Bowdoin? I know there’s a fabulous summer music program there, but what happens during the year? Is it easy to get lessons (violin?), play in an orchestra, do chamber music and possibly major in music? Not looking for a conservatory, but looking for a strong group of musicians and faculty.

Bowdoin has a small music program. I think the orchestra is on combination with Bates College up the road or at least it was a few years back and not for the whole year. S1 applied there but when he visited Vassar, we heard the orchestra and he had a huge smile and we all knew it was a much better fit. The people in the Bowdoin music department were very nice when we visited and that is my point. Please try to visit the schools and hear a rehearsal of the orchestras - we listened to many of them and that helped so much in deciding where to apply.

Thanks Chemusic, Vassar is definitely on the list for a visit, but just thought because of the summer program Bowdoin might also be worth a trip. Maybe not…
