Does anybody really live in Bowles? What Bowles residents usually like? I imagine it is an extremely inconvenient residence hall since it's so far up the hill/away from everything.

Bowles isn’t inconvenient at all. Clark Kerr is inconvenient.

It is one of the few dorms that is actually right across from campus. Bowles is a great place, it is actually rather social (much more so than neighbhoring Foothill).

Another major plus is that Bowles quads are huge compared to Unit dorms. The common room of most quads is larger than any double in the Units. The quad consists of a central common room where people have their desks, etc. and a two siderooms where the beds are; this setup allows your roommates to the study in the light and you to sleep in the dark.

Before coming to Berkeley, I heard horrible reviews about Bowles. I have to say I was rather worried. But now that I’ve been here for 5 months I really like it. I wish I could explain why. I guess I like the people and the place as a whole.

And no, it is not far away from everything. Personally, I would pick Foothill and Bowles over the units. The environment is more calm and relaxed, and the rooms are by far bigger than the units.

I agree with CCnewbie. Bowles is awesome because its quiet and is conveniently located right across from campus.

If you get a good room in Bowles like me, you will love it. I personally have a view of the bay plus one HUGE room.

i am living in bowles and it isn’t great…much prefer the units.

pros
- much more spacious than units
- foothill dining common food is better although it is ala carte
- a lot more quiet than units so easier to study
- close to engineering buildings if you are engineer
- the RA’s here seem more relaxed
- easier to smoke weed here and not get caught than at units
- so easy to sneak people who don’t live here in

cons
- all guys.
- so much easier to make friends at units
- bowles guys are nerdy. so many of them just literally live in their dorms most of the time
- far as **** from rsf (gym)
- far as **** from everything else too
- foothill dining common has no late night

Not exactly true - so easy to sneak people who don’t live here in
true, but it doesn’t actually happen all that often

cons
- all guys.
the boy to girl ratio between Bowles and Stern is 1:1.5, the same ratio in the Units is 1:1, do the math. - so much easier to make friends at units
not quite true, making friends in Bowles is not hard at all - bowles guys are nerdy. so many of them just literally live in their dorms most of the time
once again, not true; trying coming to Hall Association or singing some times, most nights there are people chilling in the lounge, and most weekends there are people playing mafia well into to the night in the library - far as **** from rsf (gym)
yea, but Unit 1 isn’t that much closer and Unit 2 is actually farther - far as **** from everything else too
are you kidding? it takes 20 minutes to get from Unit 2 (and slightly less from Unit 1) to Dwinelle/VLSB and only 10 from Bowles - foothill dining common has no late night
**Nor does Caf

lolol. it’s quite easy to smoke weed in the units man. Hell someone on my floor does it nearly every other two days.

I lived in Bowles in the summer, it’s awesome. I wish it wasn’t an all-male dorm during the school year. On the 6th floor, there’s a room with a window you can climb out of and onto the roof, pretty views :).

Dude, Bowles is effing awesome.

“the boy to girl ratio between Bowles and Stern is 1:1.5, the same ratio in the Units is 1:1, do the math.”

doesnt matter if bowles to stern ratio is 1 to 10. the fact remains that the guys live in one building and the girls in another. in the units both sexes constantly interact and see each other. the only time guys see the girls at stern are the serenades. if you go to units you see that there are always people chillin in others rooms but at bowles the doors are always closed.

“not quite true, making friends in Bowles is not hard at all”
it isnt but making friends at units is still easier just cause so many people are concentrated into a small amount of space.

“once again, not true; trying coming to Hall Association or singing some times, most nights there are people chilling in the lounge, and most weekends there are people playing mafia well into to the night in the library”

ive been to singing twice, really boring and not worth it. if stern girls were better looking then i would sing but stern girls are generally blah. people chillin in lounge? like less than 10 and they are doing their own thing. mafia with a bunch of nerdy dudes in the library…? yeah that sounds fun. i will pass.

units beat bowles in terms of meeting people. but you also pretty much can never study which sucks for people like me who are too lazy to get to the library when there is a midterm tomorrow. (so far from unit 2 gaah)
