I received a housing offer which put me in Bowles. However, I have been considering transferring to one the units mostly because of the idea of having to live with just guys. what are your thoughts? what are the pros and cons of Bowles?

Not nearly as bad as people think it will be. Much more spacious than any of the other units. Very close to class, especially if you’re science/business major.

Bowles is a great place.
Pros
-large spacious rooms (The unit dorms are like little jail cells in comparison to Bowles dorms.)
-great view of the bay
-right across the street from campus
-on-site library
-on-site workout room
-great, interesting traditions (IMO, the Dorque and the Thing is the greatest tradition)

Cons:
-If you are FPF it is far from your classes
-It is uphill, so getting to your classes in the morning is easy, but getting back can be a pain
-Only the campus buses stop across the street from it, so if you are using the AC transit 52L, you will have to walk half a block south or half a block north depending on which direction you are coming from (though the BearTransit shuttles are much more reliable than the AC Transit ones)

Are you FPF, because if you are than you can forget about transferring into the units.

When I visited Bowles on Cal day, the library seemed like it hadn’t been opened in ages… Does anyone actually use that library? It is more of just a large room with ancient books. Have you read any of them?

are you still allowed to have girls in the building or visit you or are they not allowed to be inside?

Yes you can have girls in the building at any time

I lived in Bowles Hall for two summers with a high school program (Upward Bound) which uses it every year ;D. Two years ago, there was an earthquake, and from my room, I saw the entire city just move… Most interesting thing I’ve seen in awhile :P. But yeah, if you get lucky, you’ll get a room that faces front and have an awesome view. If not, you’ll get to see woodsy critters in the back.

Don’t know much about Bowles, but it is near Stern- the all girls dorm.
