Boys/Girls State

How prestigious of a program is this? How do colleges look at it? Has anyone went...how was your experience?

They were talking about it at school the other day, but I really wasn't sure if it would be worth it or not. I'm more interested in the sciences (particularly biology) so I didn't know if I would just be wasting my time.

bump........?

A couple of my friends are going, and they told me it's prestigious. But if you applied to a program like RSI and get in, I'd do that instead, since you're interested in science.

I don't think I would get into RSI. You have to have like a 220+ on the PSATs or something like that? Yeah, I don't have that and as much as I would love to go, I don't see myself getting in. Plus, I think the deadline to apply has already passed.

Anyone else on Girls and Boys state??

EDIT: I'm going to be doing research at a university lab over the summer...so i've got the science part down. I just though that maybe this would be something nice to also add since I also have the time for it? I need input, please.

I went to Boys State last summer. It's fairly prestigious and is a definite plus on any college application.

bump.......

what does bump mean?

it just means that u want to bring up your post.

I actually don't think it's that prestigious. My counselor told me it wasn't hard to get in and the counselors actually called me and a bunch of my friends in to see if we wanted to do it, and even offered to send us free, which says to me there's probably not that much interest. But I could be totally wrong, and it is entirely possible it varies from state to state or whatever.

On the other hand, if it doesn't conflict with anything else, it couldn't hurt. And it would probably be pretty fun.

Well, it depends on the school that you attend. I know that at my school, it's really hard to get even nominated to do it. First, an e-mail is sent out to teachers requesting student nominations. Then, (if you're nominated) you have to attend an introductory meeting about Girls/Boys State. Then, you have to turn in an application. After all the applications are compiled, the teachers vote on the top 4 boy and girl candidates. Those candidates then have to go to an interview at the local American Legion. Finally, after all of that, the two representatives are chosen. I was selected as the first alternate, but I was able to receive a private donation that let me go. I know at other schools, counselors will just ask some of the popular kids to attend girls or boys state.

at my school it is total politics, those whose parents have connections somehow get nominated, you know how it goes sometimes. This annoying girl got it who everyone knows just wants to make her app look better.

I know what you mean jkjkjkj! At my school, there's this really annoying cheerleader girl who thinks that she can get anything with money. Luckily, she wasn't even nominated as one of the candidates. :)

its not that presitigious, but its an awesome experience, i wud recommend it totally to anyone

Well, at my school you had to sign a list if you were interested. Then, later ( I have no idea when), they will be interviewing us. I think they also look at an application with grades and such, but I have heard that the interview is the most important thing. After that, they selected about 2-3 boys and 2-3 girls to go.
