Prestige of Boys/Girls State?

I have been selected as one of the two kids in my school to attend California Boys State 2009.

American Legion
California Boys State

I know it has prestige among colleges, but how impressive will it be, and how much will it help to get me in to schools?

What should I look forward to while I'm there?
(Note, I'm giving up every other possible summer program like MITES, RSI, Cambridge College, CASC, etc. to attend so I do I hope it will be good!)

Thanks!

Yea! I’m going to CA Girls State and I was wondering the same question. Do UC’s recognize it as prestigious?

do it because it’s fun.

hmm. point well taken :)

I was selected for Buckeye Girls State as their #1 pick according to one of the interviewers when she called to inform me. I’d also like to know. Anyone?

I had planned on doing habitat for humanity for a week with about 8 friends the week after school lets out (late june). However, I just today got notified that I was one of 6 elected from my school for the Virginia Boys’ State. I was told it was a big honor, and that 99% of the time students choose to go if theyre chosen. There is no applying for a Boys State oportunity in my state, people are only nominated. I hadnt even heard of it until this morning, do you think it would be very beneficial to my college app, which is a tad lacking in EC/Awards. I dont know enough about it to know if its prestigious or not, and if it would be viewed the same for VA colleges as ones from other states, since its a state by state program. Or would habitat be just as effective, (and I would be going with my friends). I only have one day to decide if I can attend or not, please help!

can you do Habitat another week?

Not really, plus id be with my friends that one week, and i was looking forward to it. this other thing is like a task. if its going to be a lot more impressive ill prob go for it though, i dont know it just kinda sucks to have to decide/dictate based on colleges

***, you’re giving up MITES & RSI for Boys State?!

I’m unsure too…I’m from California, and we are about to interview; however I am very liberal, which…conflicts with the American Legion, to say the least. I’ve heard very positive things about Boys’ State, but the video seemed very pro-America, and the fact that there’s a reveille in the morning is not assuring…anybody know anything?

President Clinton went to Boys State. He was also selected to go to Boy’s Nation, where he met President Kennedy. So, I certainly think this program is worth your time. BTW, I went to Florida’s Girls State back in 1975. A program that has been around for all these years speaks for itself.

I’m not into the whole formalness of it, seems like the kind of thing I would hate. But if you have the opportunity definitely take it.

did you make it to Boy’s State? I think my daughter got in because we are a conservative, pro-America, pro-military family. Nothing wrong with that!

Go to Boys/Girls State because its fun and a good experience. It obviously can’t hurt on your resume. I went to Buckeye Boys State two weeks ago and it was honestly the best week of my life. I made so many new friends from across the state it was unbelievable. My city counselor (at boys state) kept telling me how it was a life changing experience, but i don’t think I believed him till the end. I think I can safely say that the friends that i made there (in 9 days) are closer than some of the friends i have back at home. Do it for the experience. You’ll grow so much more there if you’re not worrying about your resume. my city counselor really stressed that if one was there only to boost his resume, he probably shouldnt have come and i think thats really important if you want to have fun there.

@miguelito. i am by no means conservative…and as you can tell from the post above, I had the time of my life. I didn’t feel like there was any attempt at indoctrinating me or anything

@dinosauria. [YouTube - Buckeye Boys State 2009 1](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4o1NU-dEkgY) . obviously not THAT formal…though we were in suits :stuck_out_tongue: oh and this [YouTube - Cheering at Buckeye Boys State 2009 (2)](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNHKJ2mYqi4) . thats what it was like at buckeye boys state anyway

I don’t think anyone’s answered the question of whether or not it carries any weight/prestige in college admissions? I want to know if I’ll get something out of that wasted week.

you obviously dont deserve to go. nor should you bother going. if you think its that much of a wasted week, then by all means stay home and do your summer work. please dont take someone else’s space if you dont plan on participating actively. its sad that people like you actually do get picked to do boys/girls state…

So, I just got back from California Boys State.
I still am not too sure about the college prestige associated with it, but I’m not too worried about it at this point since it can’t negatively affect my applications. It certainly does hold prestige for military academies, however. Furthermore, after talking to the other delegates, I became even more confused on the selection criteria used to choose candidates for the program.
I honestly think it was very worth my time. It wasn’t a life changing experience for me, but neither was it a wasted week. I had a decent amount of fun and made several good friends, but I really enjoyed the time I spent there.

It really varies by States. Usually its more significant in states with an interview and application; if it only takes a nomination then go if you want but it probably doesn’t make a difference if you find something else to do with your summer. I couldn’t go to mine because of TASP, but I heard positive things about the experience, but that it was more like summer camp, ie people sneaking in alcohol and getting cliquey.

So to the OP (or one of them), if you feel like the habitat for humanity thing more suits you, do that. Boys/Girls state is just another one of those things to show that you do constructive things with your time. It doesn’t seem to carry any exceptional weight in college admissions outside the service academies and for some reason Notre Dame? (in my experience). It seems to carry the most weight with people who did boys state.
