Can someone tell me a little more about boys state...

I was elected to represent my school at it but I am not sure if its something I'm really interested in...

The program seems to be very military themed with an emphasis on "trust in god and government" and I dont know if thats my style

Im more of a laid back, liberal, fun person who likes doing interesting things but I don't know if the military aspects will even reflect accurately on me in admissions.

Bottom Line: Is this program worth it, will it help me in admissions, how good does it actually look?

Boy’s state in OK is hosted in my town and a number of my friends went to it (I didn’t attend because I had other things going on that week). About half my friends absolutely loved it, and about half hated it. They said it involved marching and stuff, but also had alot of fun activities and bonding. It was informative but rigid in structure. So it terms of how it will look in college, I don’t think it’ll make a huge difference to most liberal LAC’s, but some adcoms may like it. I’d say go if you think you’d enjoy the experience, if not don’t go and don’t sweat it.

in Ohio, it was totally worth it… its not too rigid and I made lasting friends… you will def. enjoy it even if you are more laid back and liberal… in addition, my common app essay was on Boy’s State and I was accepted to Ivies so it must look good

i went to boys state in California.
the experience and the idea was amazing. i met dozens of people with SAT score above 2300 in like first 4 hours there. it was really eye-opening to see so many smart people that i have never seen in my school.

also, i think it gave me so much EC credit. i really dont have much in my app other than OK GPA (4.5) and Below-avg SAT (2080). but i got into UCB and GW scholarship along with 6 other colleges including Emory. i honestly contribute all the acceptance to the boys state. regardless of your interest or time space, you should go…

I did Boys State in Alabama. It wasn’t rigid and it was an overall enjoyable experience. We simulated the state congress and executive branches with elections and all.

My son did it in Illinois last summer. He loved it. He is also fun loving and liberal like you describe yourself. He said he met some amazing kids.

Like you, I am a fun-loving and liberal guy, and I did it last year in NY. I am glad I did it, but I would not do it again. It is an eye-opening experience and it will broaden your horizons and perspectives, but waking up at the crack of dawn to march is not exactly my style. Boys’ State NY was not exactly a bastion of intellectual firepower. I don’t think most people there could break 2000 on the SAT’s, and people generally get to Boys’ State NY by being very conservative and very obedient. But, again, it is an enlightening experience and I’m sure it helped me get into college (I am going to either Harvard or Princeton). In short: you should step out of your comfort zone and do it.
