<p>I am starting sophomore year this fall and have the option of getting them soon. I don't think I'll end up with the clear ones. I admit I'm a little embarrassed to have a mouth full of metal at this time in my life.</p>
<p>I got mine when I was like in 8th grade, but I didnt wear the retainer, so I might have to get them again (Im about to become a college freshman). By all means try to get the clear ones (not the form fitting around the teeth ones, the ones that are real braces, but just the color is clear (u can only get them for the top)). I had the clear ones, and a few people that I talked to didnt even know I had braces.</p>
<p>yeah, i've been worrying about this too. I might get braces next fall (start of hs sophomore year), and if I'm right, they'll be on for two years, and that means at least for a short period of time, i might have braces in college. That's the worst time, I would think, because you're trying to give your potential friends a good impression of yourself. (i know, i know, looks aren't everything, but they are SOMETHING). </p>
<p>How many people do you think have braces in college?</p>
<p>And, what's wrong with the clear fiting braces? Aren't they the best for invisibility? And if you can only have the real clear braces on top, what do you do for the bottom?</p>
<p>from what i've heard, the clear fitting ones (e.g. invisalign) don't work as well. Plus you have to get a mold made every 3 weeks or something and constantly get new...things (i don't know what to call them) plus you will probably lose them.</p>
<p>The only real problem with braces these days is that they will make you look younger. So don't waste your money on a fake id if you have braces. Absolutely no one will believe you are 21. When you actually are 21 though, and people give you crap about how old you look, you can finally bring the cops in on your side.</p>

<p>Ummm...not true...it really depends on the person. My fiance got braces for the second time a few years back and though he was 21 at the time he still never gets carded unless he is at a liquor store or going to a bar that cards everybody. He has never gotten 'crap' about 'how old' he looks. He just happens to look older than he is, braces doesn't change that any! If you look a little young to begin with, they may make you look younger. But if you already look a little bit older than your age, it won't hurt you. </p>
<p>Btw, I'm in no way sponsoring the use of fake ID's...I'm just saying how old or young you look doesn't hinge on whether you wear braces or not.</p>

<p>eh it's not that big of a deal to me.. personally i think people look cute with metal in their mouth. hahaha. i just think going to the ortho every once in awhile will be a pain in college</p>
<p>My son just got braces this year ( his senior year) He had to wait til his jaw stopped growing??? what the ortho said. But he will be going to college this summer and I dont think he really cares about it. He only has to have them on for 15 months so he will be getting them off in the winter. He has clear on top and really I dont notice them that much. Like "so save me" said the real pain will be getting him to the once a month ortho appointments. he is going to college an hour away and will not have a car on campus so looks like a day of driving for MOM.</p>
<p>I've known grad students with braces... so I don't really see it as a big deal.</p>

<p>The people who would "give you crap" that I was referring to are bouncers and liquor store cashiers, not the general population. When you really are old enough, you are right, it is probably not much of an issue. However the average 18 or 19 year old, if (s)he has braces, will probably look 15-17 years old, simply by the fact that braces are associated with middle school/early high school, but obviously the kid is older than that.</p>
<p>Im getting braces in 2 weeks. Personally I dont really care. I mean I would have rather done this earlier but whatever. I will only wear them for a year and a half. My brother has to wear his for 3 years.</p>
<p>One of my really good friends has braces and he's the biggest manwhore I know... so don't really worry about it. (also, he's 20, and it doesn't make him look any younger)</p>
<p>I've never had braces lol. Then again, I had pretty bad hygiene as a small kid as I rarely flossed and was lazy with brushing my teeth. </p>
<p>Finally learned by age 12 that I needed to brush my teeth often and have only started to really floss a lot the last 2 years. </p>
<p>But I've never really been told that I need braces so I probably won't get them.</p>
<p>I was worried about looking childish with them, not really during school but when I want to look like a 20 year old woman. I don't drink so I'm not worried about buying alcohol. It's not a big deal I guess. I had a big overbite since childhood and it's noticable when looking at me from the side.</p>

<p>There's always the possibility of behind the teeth braces; maybe they're only an option in certain cases, but it's a possibility.</p>
<p>Oh yeah...I forgot to add something to really think about before getting braces as an adult!</p>
<p>My father had braces as an adult (in his 20's) and had a horrible problem called gum resorption. It's basically when your oral tissues shrink. It is very painful and can afflict you long after what caused the problem. You run a greater risk as you get older to develop gum resorption with braces. So, sooner rather than later in your college career is best! :)</p>
<p>I had a severe case and was able to get invisalign right when I started college. No one ever knew I wore them unless I told them.</p>
<p>the cost from my son's braces were around $4,800.00. Our insurance only pays a max of $1,000.00</p>

<p>Cost must vary by area. The usual here is $3-$4K, and the clear brackets are only a few hundred dollars more. Invisalign is substantially more, though, and cannot correct every problem.</p>
