braces in college?

sadly i most likely need braces again. because of my bite, invisilign isn't likely going to be an option avaible for me. do people in college or anyone wear braces? i'm a little hesistant because i feel that i might be too old for it.

ive seen plenty, but its not the norm just because most people get braces right after their adult teeth grow in just for natural reasons (apperently the earlier you get them, the better, because the tooth has less time to fully station itself in the gum/jaw bone)...talk to your orthodontist, he may just make you wear retainers (they have clear ones), and atleast at night...tell him your concerns, and emphasis you'd like a different option other than braces...i wouldn't fully rule out braces just because it may be the only option...however, do stress that you'd rather not have them unless its the only option...theres a million ways to move teeth these days, im sure he can help =P

its ok! seriously, people get braces at all stages of life now. even in late adulthood. ill have braces through my freshman year of college for sure... i dont think people see it as a big deal at all. may as well get it done.. a great smile will last you for life!

my dad and i had braces at the same time.

I know of people at my college with braces. It's not the norm, but it's not the end of the world either.

While shoebox is right that there are other ways to move teeth besides braces. that's not typically the role of a retainer. They are used before braces to widen the jaw some to relieve crowding. It's used after braces to hold your teeth in the position that the braces puts them in. You said you're getting braces "again", so you know how it all works. An HS friend had the clear braces. Not invisilign or a clear retainer, but clear brackets and a tooth-colored wire, so her braces were a lot less noticable. Maybe that will be an option for you if you must have full-blown braces again. Hopefully, since you've already worn braces once, this won't last long. But the fact that you won't be home to go for regular orthodontic visits may slow the process.

there is NOTHING wrong with having braces :] i've seen a bunch of older people with them.

Funny you should mention this because I'm getting my braces on Tuesday for my overbite too. I don't know how to explain this but they're also putting an "anchor" on the top of my mouth to help pull the teeth back too. I just started second semester of sophomore year :p

Lucky i never had to wear braces.

I know someone who's 50 years and started wearing braces 5 months ago ...

My 26 year old buddy has braces. He's the only person I can think of right now that does, but nobody really cares about folks having braces so don't worry about it.

My fiance is 24 and still has braces. The only downside is finding orthodontists when you move around (and paying for it if you don't have insurance coverage there).

Better to get them now than later, wouldn't you rather have to endure braces now than braces or bad teeth later? I think it's worse in your 20s...if you're still a teen it's not a big deal.

I'm in first year and I still have mine on. I get them off in march after 6 years of on-and-off braces-wearing and I'm really excited.

It doesn't matter if you have them in university. Nobody really cares.

i still wear my retainer and get it checked every month but the right side of my mouth still has an open bite for 2 months. it doesn't seem to be closing. he says he can fix it but i dont see any results so far.

thanks for the feedback though. for those that have braces, do you still go to your orthodontist monthly? i might get braces again but if i end up going to college thats too far to keep in contact on the regular, it might seem like a hassle.

I have braces, and I have to go to the orthodontist monthy. but dont think of it as a hassle, I have to wear elastics too and right now they're worn on my canine teeth (connecting top to bottom) so i look like a vampire. bottom line, the more diligent you are (which includes monthly checkups), the faster you can have normal teeth/bite.

Nobody cares if you have braces or not. If you are self-conscious about it, get the white ceramic ones for the top row of teeth and metal ones for the bottm row of teeth. My orthodontist said this is the best combination since the white ceramic ones on the top will provide an "invisible" look, while the metal ones on the bottom will prevent your teeth on top getting chipped by the brackets.

My ex has them and he's a pretty big "ladies man" sexy Latin type, so....

Yes, braces suck -- especially if you are getting it again. The thing to remember is that they will come off at some point, and they are probably only 1/15th as noticeable to others as you think.

LOL, AUlostchick. Funny description.

I'm a high school senior now, and I'm probably going to have braces for a couple months in college before I get them taken off. I don't see it as too big of a deal- after all, braces are only so that you'll look better in the future. And anyone who judges you because of them probably wouldn't have made a good friend in the first place.

i don't have perfect teeth, although they're not so bad either. do you think i should get braces even though i'm already in college?

How much does the imperfection bother you? Is there pain? Is it hindering your life in a big way? Look into invisalign.
