Brag, Brag, Brag, Part II

Bravo Thesbo! Big Congrats!! What a summer for you!

SUE

All I can say is WOW! I'm definitely impressed! Congratulations!

Thanks! Now that the initial thrill has worn off, I need to get over being more than slightly intimidated! Meh ... I can use it. Lotsa vulnerability in this role ... I've done the scenes ...

We had drama banquest Saturday at our HS. The students put together the entire party, catering and everything. It was great. They give out the 'drammys', the HS equivalent of the Tony Awards. My D got Best Actress for Adelaide!!! She also received the "Directors" award. I don't know if I am more proud of the awards or of the fact that as VP of the drama club, she put together a catered party for 200 people.

Also my D and friend received 1st place at the ITS festival for California for a scene!!!

I'm going to miss her.

congrats fosselover...that is great! Adelaide is a wonderful role! All that preparation is quite an accomplishment too! My d also had the high school "tony awards" at her school and she got best supporting actress for playing Sister Robert Ann in Nunsense! She actually looked pretty good as a nun!! lol

My S, who will be a junior at Emerson next semester, is now working as a paid intern (one of 6 - only two of which are students) at the Texas Shakespeare Festival. Everyone else is a working professional. This is his first paid acting gig.

He has parts in 4 plays - Macbeth, Midsummer Night's Dream, Cyrano and Beauty and the Beast. They keep giving him more lines (parts); I suppose as they see what he can do. He has a principal role in Beauty. All four plays go up at the same time, so they will be doing 2-3 plays a day for the festival. The entire experience lasts 10 weeks. The only downside is that it is in Kilgore, Tx, which is in the middle of nowhere. And 2 hours away from his girlfriend in Dallas. With erratic bus schedules and not being able to rent a car (he's not 21 for another year), it's been difficult for them to meet.

So far, it has been a phenomenal experience for him working with professional actors, costumers, set designers/builders, etc. The head of the MT dept at Emerson is his director for Midsummer and is one of the founding members of the Festival, which is a great plus for S.

When this is over, not only will he have had a wonderful experience and great things to put on his resume, but he gets to spend time with his girlfriend and then they both head back to Emerson in August.

Peggy, how are rehearsals going for your daughter at the Croswell? We're going to try to make the performance on the 19th, between my daughter's return from Florida and her departure for Interlochen. Since I'm not yet sure what she has planned for the few days she's home (I'll never figure out why it's so difficult to write things on the calendar we have hanging for this express purpose ;) ), I was wondering if you have any information about the feasibility of showing up to buy tickets without a reservation.

Congrats to everyone's big wins. Yesterday my S got the news he'd been waiting for, His NYC production of Merrily We roll along is moving uptown to an off broadway house and is being extended for 4 weeks. My S. graduated from NYU this spring. He was in Plywrights Horizon conservatory and finished in 3 years. It is very scary as a parent to realize that your child is just going to jump into the NY theater scene with no job prospects in sight. He was very lucky to get cast in this show, he's Charlie Kringas, and has some terrific numbers. Now we are hoping for an agent to see him, and we have lots of hours ahead doing the mailings. If anone has suggestions on how to get agents to come and see the show I'd love to get your advice. Meanwhile in the first two weeks of the shows first run at the Gene Frankel theater he got great press and was even mentioned in a couple of Broadway chat room sites!
Well, I just had to vent, I know this is a roller coaster ride, as I was a chorus cutie a godzillion years ago, but the thrill is amazing! Thanks to all for listening, CAm

Camge,

Congrats to you and your S! Very exciting news. My D and I are at the beginning of this "thrill ride," as you wonderfully desscribe it so have no direct experience with how to attract industry types to the show. However, as with many things, it may be a matter of making lots and lots of "cold calls" and as you mentioned, sending out as much publicity as you can. I would think the the show's producers would also be doing that. Copy his positive notices and send them along to agents, producers and casting directors - that's what a hired flak would do. It's tedious work and not always immediately rewarding, but he will be laying the groundwork for future contacts. Any advertising type will tell you that they are always striving for multiple "hits" or contacts. In addition to doing good work, that's how you get remembered. Good luck!

Camge,
Congrats! And best wishes to your son. I've followed your news closely and have appreciated your encouragement re:my son's placement in Playwrights. (He loved his 1st year). It's such a scary and exciting process!. It's clear that your son has amazing talent. Please keep us updated.

Camge, that is SOOOOOO exciting! I recall about your son graduating Playwrights in three years but I had no idea he was playing Charles Kringas in Merrily. I have even read about that particular production online. It had caught my eye because that is one of my D's favorite musicals of all time. Her theater program has done it though she was not in it. She seriously considered directing this show last year. I think your son's show getting press in NYC will bring out people. Things will happen for him. He should send out postcards and publicity to the agents, plus submit resumes/headshots with a note of this showing.

I can't wait to hear what happens next. Mucho congrats on his casting. Things are gonna happen for him, wait and see. We will all relish in hearing about it, particularly as he is ahead of the game from many of the sons/daughters and students on here who are younger.

Susan

Camge,

Also want to give best wishes and congratulations to your s!!! How fabulous!! Wishing him much success!!

Camge: How impressive! Congratulations to your S and his hard work. As a "chorus cutie" (love it), I am sure you inspired him all along the way. Enjoy!

Congrats to your son! Please keep us updated; maybe we'll go check it out! I'm a teacher, so I'll be off for the summer and will have plenty of time to go into the city. (PS - my d starts NYU in the fall, so it's great to hear of a graduate going on to professional work! :)

Hey I just realized - seems no one but me and 5pants posted our ages (well, I admit; I didn't know it would be right under my name each time! lol)

Haven't been around here for a while, and just found the question by mezzomom regarding seeing my daughter's show at the Croswell Opera Theater. Unfortunately, it looks like I'm too late to answer her, but in case there are any lurkers out there from southern mid-Michigan:

Croswell Opera Theater is located in Adrian, south and west of Ann Arbor. Tickets are still available. Check www.croswell.org. The show runs through next weekend.

According to Daughter, the show is going great. There were some last minute costume problems (the girl doing the backwalkovers wearing the corset had trouble keeping body parts inside her costume . . .). But she's having a blast and will really hate to see it end.

And as for age, I don't know if mine is listed, but I just turned 48. Although this morning, there are parts of me that feel a heck of a lot older!

Peg

I have to brag about someone else...

Even though I'm graduating, I wanted to help with our school's musical for next year (Guys and Dolls) as much as possible, help which ended up being A. Lot. Of. Photocopying.

One of my really good friends is two years younger than me, and while she is a very confident person, she was REALLY nervous about auditioning because there were a lot of people going out for it (a rare happening at our school). I had a feeling she did well, because one of the music teachers mentioned how much she enjoyed the audition.

The list went up last week-- she got Adelaide! I'm SO proud of her. We always joke that she's the new me, only I definitely never had the lead in the last musical (when I was in grade nine)! She is the sweetest person ever and will be an absolute pleasure to direct. I'm so excited to see the show now!

september,
I love the fact that you felt compelled to celebrate a friend's success here. It shows you have a huge heart and ability to share in another person's accomplishments - both qualities that will make you a valued member of a theatre school ( and company ) someday!

Peggy, sorry to say we didn't get to Adrian to see "Chicago." After putting the plans in place, I realized we were intending to go on Father's Day, and my husband wasn't interested in making the drive. So we opted to stay home...whereupon he got called in to work at the last minute! Too late for us to head to Adrian, and no father to spend Father's Day with. I'm sure there is a Murphy's Law to cover that!

And now my brag for the day...I got a call from my daughter this afternoon, who is at Interlochen attending the U-M All State Choir Camp. Based on her placement audition yesterday, she was selected to sing in the Chamber Choir, as well as the All State Choir. They choose 16 kids from the division (4 of each voice part), and she is one of the 16! I'm so happy for her...she was more nervous about going to Interlochen than I've seen for any other camp she's attended. She's well aware that at home, she's a big fish in a very tiny pond, and I think she was worried that if the pond was bigger, she wouldn't know how to swim. But she seems to swimming just fine...

Oh, and since we're confessing~I'm 47!

Me and some kids from school that live near each other made a road trip to see Thesbo play Ophelia last night. 3 words … OH. MOY. GOWAD!!!!! It must be that when you see someone all the time in studio you forget how amazing they are until you get away and see them somewhere else later. The applause decibel level EXPLODED when she took her bow at curtain if that tells you anything. And to think that on the Theatre thread she said there is no way she will be anywhere near as good as she wants to be in four years. YA RIGHT!!! Haha! We should all hope for as much! I’m so proud! :D
