breaking in low-quarters?

i've heard a lot about breaking in the new boots, but what about the low-quarters. how and how much?

wear them? how else do you break in shoes?

Wear them a LOT. Those things will kill your feet. I have massive calcium deposits on my heels now that I might have to have surgery on.

Get a good set of gel insoles and wear them in at the same time. LOTS of standing in lines at parade rest on R-day, my shins and feet were killing me!

I've been breaking in my low quarters for a few weeks now, and been trying desperately not to scuff them or make it so I won't have to shine them. Should I worry about shining them now, or will they care how shiny they are on the first day? Also, the things they've sent me talk about what shoes to wear on R-Day, also low quarters. Am I supposed to wear low quarters to R-Day, or do I need a different pair of shoes to R-Day?

Don't worry too much about the first day, but I can tell you that the layer they have on them now is NOT a shine. In fact, a lot of people will tell you to strip that layer with nail-polish remover or alcohol, then reshine the whole thing. You'll be wearing low quarters on R Day.

take them to the shower with a green scrub pad. dont be too rough with them

Saddle soap and a soft brush in warm water worked for me. After they're dry, start building a base layer. When you shine a pair of shoes really well, you can see yourself in them.

One thing no one mentions is edge dressing. Buy a bottle of Kiwi edge dressing (in the GLASS bottle not the weird plastic one) and start putting thin layers on the edge of the sole. As soon as one is dry, you can add another. This builds up and after a while, you'll have a fairly indestructible base layer of edge dressing. Makes you look pretty strac.

So I should get them nice and shiny before R-Day in addition to breaking them in?

Only if you want to stand out in the not good way. Beast is all about camoflague and blending in. I would put on a good base layer of kiwi, and edgedress quite a bit, but if you show up with perfect, parade ready shoes, your squad is going to hate you until they have all caught up.

I bought my low quarters at the local (50 miles south of here...omg) BX at the Air Reserve Station. The Army shoes they tried to sell were patent leather, and the letter clearly said "Leather" so I got the identical shoe in leather, but they said this is the "air force shoe"... Does anyone have any clues? Can someone email a picture of theres so I can check if they are the same? Are they shiny already? The ones I got were dullish. my email is thepiccmaster@aol.com
