Bringing a Comp in Dorms

Hey all. I have a desktop with lots of important information that I don't want to transfer onto my laptop. Plus, my laptop is slow and riddled with adware/garbage. Would it be fine to bring my desktop into the dorms? I'm living in a triple plaza.

Yep it is fine.

Of course it’s fine.

Yeah why not? Desktops are more comfortable to use anyways.

Cool I just figured the room would be too cluttered but I guess I’m just being stupid :P

Even though I didn’t bring my desktop… I didn’t bring it because it’s HEAVY and it’s a full tower case (initially thought it wouldn’t fit anywhere). I miss my custom built rig and typing on this cramped laptop keyboard does take some time getting used to.

I have a mid tower case. I’ll find a way to stick it somewhere because I really can’t imagine ditching my awesome desktop ^^

i didn’t bring mine cuz of space in triple, the only place i could fit it was under the desk and its not that much space anyway, plus desktops are way louder than laptops, even i thought it was loud to the point it was annoying so definitely didn’t want to bother roommates. (well i use a pretty old case that doesn’t have the modern cooling technologies, so i crank up the fans pretty loud to keep it cool)

now i have my own room and bought a few new parts, now it just sound like a jet engine even with a closed case :frowning: the fan on gtx 400 series+ stock cooler for phenom x4 are not a good combo

I know how you feel about the jet engine noise from some PC components. If you have the money, get some zalman coolers. Completely silent fans with quality cooling.

yeah i definitely need to replace the stock cooler on my phenom but don’t want to go through the pain of taking the mobo out to put on a cooler (maybe i’ll do that when i find a new case) but the GTX’s fan is so loud as well, and no way to replace that

anyways you should bring your desktop if you are a gamer, if not i would say leave it at home and invest in a good laptop (I am a mac person when it comes to laptops, UCLA store has good discounts on them :D) because of the noise and room it takes, plus you need room on a cramped desk for monitor (assuming you are like most people i see with 20’'+ monitors) and most importantly its not as portable, if you need to rely on using it then you’ll have to stay in the room in your seat, not as good as sitting on your bed, or if you want to go study elsewhere (such as lounge and study rooms) then much easier to have a laptop, also if you get sex-iled a lot then laptop>desktop for sure

Definitely bring gaming desktop to UCLA dorms. The internet is amazing. With a download accelerator over winter break when I stayed over an extra day in the dorms because of flight issues, I was getting ridiculous download speeds of 900mb. Thats right 900 MB!

I miss dorm internet :(

i found my ps3 in more use than pc during my dorm stays, but i can see your point about downloading and running lots of games, i would be careful about downloading in the dorms but i know plenty of people that torrent everything

What website would allow you to download their stuff at 900 MBps?
Despite how fast the dorm’s connections are, it’s mostly limited to how fast the file sharing site lets you download. For example, Rapidshare is always at a 80-100 KBps limit.

Lag-free gaming is really nice though. I’m always at like 3 ping.

In the dorms, I get around 29ms ping… How do you get 3ms?

Actually you can. They make aftermarket heatsinks/fans. I would know because I needed one to overclock my gfx card.

Ping mainly depends on distance from the server you are connected to. So you’d get a 3ms ping if you were playing on a server based in LA.

To reduce the noise of your fans, turn down their speed or buy new ones. I use some low db fans from scythe-usa.com; with a tuniq tower 120 and I can’t even hear my PC with the window open.

oh i see, i don’t plan on OCing since my 460 should last me a year or 2 and no real reason to OC as i can pretty much run everything on stock these days… and turning down the fan speed is a little risky after burning a couple of parts… definitely looking into a new case and fan… but either way PC will pretty much always be louder than laptops and slightly more inconvenient in terms of portability and space it takes up… but on the other hand, if you are a hardcore gamer, laptop really just isnt an option
