Do you think it's a good idea (manageable) to bring an XBox to your dorm at Rutgers, specifically the first semester? Just got one through the recent Best Buy student deal of a free 360 with a laptop purchase of $700 or more. I just have a couple sports games. I'm not some video game freak.

And can you connect online with both a laptop and game system with ethernet cables in your dorm room? How many jacks or whatever do you get? I'm staying on Livingston.

So yeah, my parents are worried that I'll be too easily distracted in that crucial first semester. Yet I don't know why they're even sending me to college in the first place then if they're really that concerned about my time management skills.

First Semester is a time of adjustment. You really should focus on getting good grades…but at the same time, if this is your way of taking a break from the stress then do it. And yes, it’s possible to connect online that way. You may need a splitter of some kind if there’s only one spot for ethernet, but it should work.

I had an Xbox in my room that me and my roommate would use when we were bored or didn’t want to study. Was totally fine, about the ports I (and I think most) bought a router (highly recommended).

what kind of laptop did u get ( include stats) btw? im going to bring my ps3 so i dont think its going to big deal. i heard it would be smart to bring a router for internet.

It’s an HP with Intel Core 15 processor, about a 14 inch screen, and about 6.5 hours battery life. Don’t remember anything else offhand. Memory is solid. It’s pretty nice.

I think I’m going to forgo bringing the 360 for a few weeks just to see how everything goes with getting acclimated to the community. I only live like 35 minutes away.

But yeah I agree that setting up a router is probably better than trying to use multiple ethernet cables. Good idea.

You are going to need a router, but the best thing you can do (and what I’m doing) is get a kensington lock for it. The xbox has a place where you can put the lock on and secure it to a desk. This is a must if you don’t want to risk getting your xbox stolen. Also, while you’re at it get one for your laptop to. Just provides that extra piece of mind.

That’s a good idea, it’s a fast way to make friends during the first couple days :)

Just be sure to limit the use of the xbox. A couple people on my floor had game systems, and their rooms became high-traffic areas. That’s perfectly fine, but make sure that people don’t impose on your personal space and study time. In this way, it can become pretty bothersome. (Just speaking from a few friends’ experiences)
