I was accepted ED to GW last night with a Political Science major.. I wanted to see if anyone knew the specifics of GW's policy towards AP credit... Can it be used to satisfy some of the Gen Ed requirements? I believe in the Honors College it is not permitted, but does anybody know if this is different outside of Honors? The website only states that you can transfer up to 24 credits, but I'm confused as to whether or not these credits can eliminate some gen ed classes.. Thanks!!

No, you cannot use your AP Credits to fulfill your GPAC requirements. Its pretty irritating, but depending on what APs you have, you can probably fulfill some of your other PoliSci requirements.

I’m a PoliSci major, a 2015 Freshman, and I brought in 15 AP Credits (AP Lit, AP Lang, AP Euro and APUSH) and I used AP Euro and the two classes that AP US counted for to fill some of my elective requirements for my degree.

I also know some people who brought in a LOTTTT more than 24 credits.

They let me bring in 26 AP credits so I don’t think they’re very strict with that. And since you would be in Columbian I don’t think they would count for your gen eds like she said^, but in case anyone else is reading this, the Elliott school allows for AP credits to count for your gen ed requirements :)

My S is a sophomore in Columbian College (political science major), and I just checked his DegreeMap (online record of your personal requirements and whether and how you’ve met them). AP courses that he brought in with him DID count for gen ed requirements. For example, he doesn’t have to take any math (quantitative requirement) because his AP calculus and AP stat were applied to meet the 2-course requirement in that category.

Sorry to say that they changed the Gen Ed Requirements in Columbian College starting with Fall 2011. You’ll want to verify this with the school, but I think that AP credits can no longer be used to fulfill the specific Gen Ed Requirements. They want you to use GW courses for that. You can still get elective credit with APs as noted by ezbreez and kb067 above. It can get confusing because requirements change depending on when you enroll.
