Quick question - I'm buying a bag (man-purse, satchel.. whatever) and I like to keep my stuff small and efficient.

I'm taking Math 53, Chem 1A and ESPM 50AC next sem. Do you guys know if any of those classes would require you to carry books around? I would assume not to lecture, but to lab or discussion is it necessary? Math and Chem books would be quite bulky and a pain in the ass to carry around, so I'd really rather not bother with that.

just bring the things necessary for your preferred method of taking notes. (laptop, spiral notebook, that weird computer pen, a tape recorder [with prof’s permission – or not], etc.)
and as insert mentioned, bring the items necessary to complete in-class tasks.

My Math 53 GSI liked to discuss or assign problems from the book (she didn’t type them up or copy them onto the board) so it was almost mandatory to bring that along.

God, I hope I don’t have to deal with that BS. Lugging some freakin math book around. I’ll probably just take some shears to the book and dice it up chapter by chapter and then binder clip that ****.

So what is the general opinion with these satchels(man purses)…? I’ve always wondered what the consensus is - Urban/stylish or girlish?? My solution is that I have a backpack if I end up carrying a lot and a satchel for lighter things.

Ah, that’s good. I’m getting a timbuk2 EULA. Putting my own design on it. I plan on carrying as little as possible and biking around. Just a couple spiral notebooks and a textbook or two if I absolutely have to. It’s economical and excellent quality. When I’m rolling in it later on, I’ll get myself a Louis Vuitton. I like small, simple, and efficient.

As was stated before, Math 53 uses a paperback book (it’s about an inch or so thick), so it’s really not all that bad. My GSI would have us do practice problems from it during discussion, but others didn’t use it…so it really depends. :)

I know what my consensus is. Attention whore.
On a sidenote, it is incredibly sad that someone who calls himself a “student” is fussing over ruining his precious bag with heavy books.

“God, I hope I don’t have to deal with that BS. Lugging some freakin math book around. I’ll probably just take some shears to the book and dice it up chapter by chapter and then binder clip that ****”

Yeah reading that out loud makes whomever wrote it sound extremely pathetic =P
Guess what? Books are important for learning. You’re at school to learn, not whatever ulterior motive is floating freely in the front of your head, such as show off your amazing taste in bags or pseudointellectualism. You’re one of those people. The pseudo’s there because you’re kind enough to post your schedule.

I would try to be respectful and polite, which takes a great deal of effort and is extremely rewarding, but I can’t respect someone whose posts are all extremely self centered, attention seeking, and condescending. This isn’t your playground for attention (read, this isn’t tumblr). Let’s take a quick look at this illustrious post history:

“Aight, this is for all the people whose mommy doesn’t buy their own clothes for them.”

“But seriously, what’s up with all you over-achieving little tykes and Berkeley? Berkeley is a safety school for you 4.0+ GPA types. You could **** on your application…”

Oh man. I really do try my best around here to keep civil, but I really can’t stand you.

I don’t really want attention that much. I don’t even bother to make threads. I’m not condescending either, I try to be objective and I’m not afraid to voice my opinions. Believe it or not, there are people here that appreciate some of my posts, and I know that people just post whatever on these boards, producing the fifty new threads we get each day, but seriously?

“I don’t want to carry around heavy books because I want to carry a man purse”

Why are you even going to our school, because it doesn’t sound like you’re looking for anything resembling an education.

I’m entitled to my taste in bags, and you’re entitled to your lack thereof.

I am certainly looking for an education, but I’m just trying to avoid killing my back and exacerbating my scoliosis. Sorry, but I do prefer a messenger bag though I’d rather just carry nothing.

I don’t know if you realize this, but you can be intelligent, get an education, and still be somewhat fashionable at the same time.

Dude, you’re American. Literally the most unfashionable developed country in the world. Don’t even try to pull that crap against me. I get it, you prefer a certain type of bag and you suddenly have back problems that are critical to the employment of this bag and yet weren’t brought up in the OP. Try to keep your tone a little less derogatory and insulting and I’ll turn my head the other way. “deal with that BS. Lugging some freakin math book around”, “Math and Chem books would be quite bulky and a pain in the ass”.

I appreciate colourful language pretty easily, but you should be grateful that you even have the opportunity to carry these books. And whining’s never really looked upon favourably. This place has the asterisks thing going on for a reason. I learned the hard way.

Oh and . . . . messenger bags are actually absolutely terrible for you if you really do have back problems. Unfortunately, your vain little head probably thinks that it’s beneath you to carry something with two shoulders. Good thing you can only afford brands that rip off “real” European designers.

Honestly, I couldn’t really give a **** what direction you turn your head. I don’t want to carry a book, SO WHAT. Deal man. I posted an honest inquiry desiring to know if I needed to carry the book to class or not, I really have no idea what you’re flipping out about.

If little **** like this ***es you off so easily, I don’t see how you’re going to make it through life. Do yourself a favor… take the rod out of your .

I’m not flipping out. You’re the one blaring the expletives. Please do yourself a favour and get the most out of the opportunity you earned by taking books to school. You might not realize it, but some professors would actually feel disrespected if you show up without your books. You’re a grown man. They are not that heavy.

If you really do have scoliosis, your doctor would have recommended that you avoid messenger bags. They don’t distribute weight very evenly. Obviously, this hasn’t affected your decision to purchase a messenger bag so your scoliosis can’t be very severe, but if it weren’t, then why the determination to . . dun dun dun . . . not carry those oh so heavy books? You’ll probably find them useful in class.

I found this thread entertaining…mainly because it is 1 AM and it is about a man-purse…I mean, come on, who cares? I respect caiacs as he is a well established poster on this forum with more knowledge than I, certainly. He gets a little testy sometimes sure, but he , like everyone else, brings their own unique points of view. easylife808, I haven’t seen much of you, but I hope you also become a poster who makes good decisions on what he posts. There really is no need to hate. I usually don’t even buy most of the books my classes require, thus I don’t bring them to class. My professors don’t care since they don’t even know me.

@GeneralWisdom - I just use those drawstring bags if I don’t have much to carry and a backpack if I do. Drawstring bags look sporty, so they aren’t considered “girlish.”
