Hi- I think I am meeting my D in NYC on Monday, and I wnted to know if there is a comprehensive list somewhere of shows that are not dark on Monday nights.

Thanks, and I would love to hear your recommendations too. :)

Avenue Q, Rent, Spring Awakening, Phantom.

If you haven't seen any of the four, which I know is unlikely, I think you'd probably enjoy each of them. I haven't seen Phantom recently so cannot comment on the cast but it's always an enjoyable night of theatre. Avenue Q is a great show and Howie Michael Smith is great as Rod. It's his Broadway debut, he's a grad of CMU. Rent is always a good choice. The cast at the moment is solid, with Tamyra Gray currently playing Mimi. If you're an American Idol fan, you'll remember her. Two of the original cast from 11 years ago are returning in a month, in case you're back in the city then - Adam Pascal and Anthony Rapp. Tickets are usually pretty easy to get for this long-running show. Spring Awakening is another story. Tickets may be more difficult to get than just a couple of weeks ago. It's an interesting show, with some talented kids, but it's not everyone's cup of tea. Have fun!

Edited to add: I forgot that the holiday week schedule will be different so that more shows will be available that night! Lucky you!

I looked up a bunch of musicals for you in reference to this Monday night on Broadway (haven't looked into the plays though)....

Some that are showing Monday, July 2:

The Color Purple
Avenue Q
Chicago
Les Miserables
Mamma Mia
Spring Awakening
Phantom of the Opera

I recently saw Spring Awakening. My 18 year old has seen it three times and my 20 year old saw it once. We all really enjoyed it. I think your D surely will and I imagine you will as well. I've seen Chicago in the past, fun show. I've seen Mamma Mia on tour....not a favorite, but entertaining. Phantom is a classic and I've seen it on tour, but is not a favorite of mine. I haven't seen Les Mis on Bdway and that might be a good one for you guys. I have always w anted to see Avenue Q and love the soundtrack. The Color Purple is likely good but I haven't seen it. My suggestion of these options is to try for Spring Awakening. It is not a typical Bdway musical, but one thing that is cool on Broadway is all the various creative visions that make up theater. Spring Awakening is a creative departure for musical theater. We know some people in it too and the cast is talented. The male leads are particularly exceptional. The music is good and your D would be into it, I believe.

EDIT: cross posted with AlwaysAMom! But if your D hasn't seen RENT....consider that! I've seen it about five times and so have my kids....great show. I have not seen this Bdway cast, however.

PS to AlwaysAMom....thanks for mentioning about Adam Pascal and Anthony Rapp coming back to the cast as I will pass that on to my NYC D who has been a fan of Anthony's since elem school! (I've told you she has met him in college and go to work with him but she never saw him in RENT on stage!)

Oh my gosh, you are both wonderful. We have seen a bunch of those shows, and we were considering off broadway- I Love You, You're Perect, Now Change. But you have added some other great choices. I feel so lazy, I was expecting someone to just tell me a link, but you two have as usual, gone and done the research.
My D has seen Spring Awakening once and would probably love to see it again. And you can never go wrong with Les Miserables, in my book.

Ooh and I thought Tamyra Gray was wonderful on AI, I would love to see her. So many choices, and so little time!

Thanks again. Have a Happy 4th everyone. :)

D and I just got back from NY and saw Spring Awakening. Loved it. We always get our discount tickets at Broadwaybox.com. They show discount tickets available on all those shows except Spring Awakening ( That discount just expired) and Color Purple. . We saw Rent a while ago, not this cast and loved it, too.

anothermom, you're welcome! You're right that you have some great choices. Whenever I'm in the city, I always wish that I could stay and see a different show every night until I'm through all of them! The thing is, by that time, there would be new ones open and I'd have to stay even longer! :)

Susan, you're welcome for the Adam and Anthony news. They're only there for six weeks, from July 30 til Sept. 9. Not sure I'll make it down then, but all of my Ds are going and already have tickets ordered!

AlwaysAMom: Thanks, I have passed on that information!

and if you want something on the lighter side, we always enjoy Forbidden Broadway. It's on off-broadway cabaret-type show where the performers present spoofs and parodies from many of the popular shows. They are about to open their 25th season.

It's a must-see for us and this year we'll be catching the monday show

My D and I saw The Color Purple at the Cadillac Palace in Chicago last month and really enjoyed it. I was reluctant to pay $120 a piece for tickets but got online and started guessing at the "code word" to see what would happen. First I put in OPRAH and it wasn't accepted. Then I tried the word PURPLE and it was accepted! So we ended up with 6th row dead Center Orchestra tickets for $65 a piece!!

there are several free sites on the web that also show code for great discounts.

broadwaybox
theatermania
and even playbill

there are some sites that charge $5 for 30 day access to a list, but our experience is that it is really no better than the free ones.

It's a great way to get some real bargains

Wow, Alismom, that was a productive guessing session.

WMonMTDad, we saw and enjoyed Forbidden Broadway when it was in San Diego last year. It looks like they have updated it, and we will put it on our list too. Then, maybe the old pull a show from a hat will work. So many great choices.

We're up there 7/13-7/16. Catching ACL, Curtains, Forbidden Broadway, and Deuce.

Deuce is non-musical, but may be the only and last chance to catch Angela Lansbury. With an artist like that and her record, it's just hard to pass up

You'll enjoy Deuce! Another fabulous play by the incomparable Terrence McNally. The play itself and Marian Seldes are actually better reasons to see it than Angela Lansbury is! :)

I'd read that there was major debate about who to nominate for what for the Tony's related to Deuce (realtively speaking, of course, for a two person show)

Debates about the Tonys are pretty common. :) I was referring to the career of Marian Seldes really, more than just her performance in this play. Everyone knows Angela Lansbury's name but Marian has had a far more extensive career in the theatre, in addition to 50+ years of tv and film roles and roughly 25 years teaching at Juilliard, and more recently at Fordham. She's a NY treasure.

Enjoy your trip to the city, you're seeing some fun shows!

We decided on Les Mis. I don't care that it will be the 4th time I have seen that show. It is my favorite, and we got nice discounted seats through BroadwayOffers. I have never seen it on Broadway, we have always seen touring companies.

Thanks everyone.

Saw Xanadu 2 weeks ago (the day before the lead male broke his ankle). It is a very funny show-real parody on 80's. Laughed so hard....don't miss it. And it is running a $45 special right now.

Audi, I'm glad to hear that Xanadu is fun! I feel badly for James Carpinello. This was his first Broadway show since Saturday Night Fever closed many years ago and he didn't even make it til opening night. Poor guy. Luckily, Cheyenne Jackson who was involved in Xanadu in the workshop phase was able to step right in. I'm sure he'll do a great job. He's a very talented actor and also very pretty to look at! :)

I felt badlly for James too but heard he is coming back for the openning which they have pushed back until mid July. I would suggest that to those who go see the show, get tickets not on the stage-you will be looking at the actor's backs for most of it and the savings isn't much right now. I have seen Kerry Butler in a few things and this was my favorite so far and Jackie Hoffman will make you pee in your pants!
