Writing was my worst section on the SATs, and my essay was pretty bad (I liked it, the graders really didn’t). I’m not sure if it’s weighted less - since it’s been around awhile, colleges probably are beginning to have enough data to understand it. In addition, the multiple choice part does test one’s knowledge of grammar, to an extent, so the section is not completely random.

I know nothing about the ACT writing, however.

The SAT essay is a crazy thing. I wrote the worst essay *ever/i and got a 11, so go figure.

The Common App is out!

Woot, I already started it. And by that I mean have practically finished it.

Yup, another possible Brown EDer here. I say possible because I’m not quite sure if I want to ED anywhere, but if I do, it will be to Brown. Fell in love with the atmosphere (and what I saw of the student body) when I visited.

So what’s up, guys and gals?

This is weird. If I fill out one activity on the Common App and press ‘save’, nothing saves and everything I filled out disappears! Why!?

Hi! i want to apply ed too!
it looks like i got in on this kinda late, so i’m not sure if you’ve covered this, but remind me again about the financial aid implications of applying early?

don’t ivys have a policy of giving full tuition to people whose incomes are less than $60,000 and 90% to those less than 100,000 and so forth?

omg my heart is breaking because i’m actually head over heels in love with brown.
i must have it!! my body fiends for it.

I’m pretty sure that’s only Harvard (and maybe Yale/Princeton). What happens is you fill out FAFSA and it gives you a number - this is what the government expects you can pay. Brown tweaks this a bit - it takes into account home equity (which raises the amount you are expected to pay) but is more generous with other situations (secondary school tuition is taken into account, lowering the amount, for example). You then receive Expected cost - amount they came up with in a combination of subsidized loans and money.

So if you’re unsure you’ll receive enough to attend, ED might not be a good idea, since it’s binding and they believe the amount they give you is enough for you to attend.

When and where do the international financial statement (not aid request) forms come out, any idea?

Hi! Add me to the list of ED applicants! I went back and forth for a while, even though I’ve been in love with Brown for ages, because I was afraid that for some unfathomable reason I’d change my mind, but I just visited a couple weeks ago and my love is in full blossom again!

I am a tiny bit concerned about the FA issue with ED too though. Mainly because I doubt we’re going to get much money if any at all because my parents have considerable income, but my parents won’t want to pay full tuition.

I think Brown has the most obsessive bunch of ED-ers…do the other schools even have discussion threads yet? :p

Oh guys, btw, the Why Brown character limit is 1600 right? Not less, I hope…

Oh and how long should the ‘Who interested you in Brown?’ answer be?

My parents are divorced, and my dad’s wife doesn’t have a job, so all in all 72k, so I’ll be applying ED. We’d get a pretty great package. Maybe not full ride, but a hell of a lot cheaper than an in-state.

5-odd months till ED decisions come out!

I seriously cannot wait until I visit in August. SO excited. :D

Can we hear some visit reports? :)

I’m at TASP right now by the way, but I’d still like to hear!

Ah, I’ve already told you about my visit right?

Man, I’m gonna be soooooooo devastated if I don’t get in :(
